I just arrived back home (and its cold) and I am still on cloud nine after our thrilling victory last night.
I want to thank all the FSU fans on this Jaguars.com message board, in Jax, Tally, the State of Florida, Countrywide, and overseas who supported the team by watching them play throughout the season, buying merchandise, etc
I want to send a special thanks to the boosters especially the LGC club for allowing me to join in with them over the weekend for an outing at Hollywood Park. The reason why I decided not to become a general booster was because I dont live/work in Tallahassee where im able dontate full time, but only sporadically. I am part of the Alumni Association to where I am still able to network with other alums and boosters which led to me being able to get my hands on the NC game tickets in California. I am forever gracious because there was many long time boosters (who suffered through the lean years) who were left out of attending the game because of ticket allotment issues based on their standing. Their frustration was understandable, and after hearing from the association, there was alot of misinformation being given out on the allotment process. One suggestion I have in mind is to give LGC, and PGC first ticket priories since they are the big donors, and after that extend to the Renegades and Tomahawks.
Onto my experience.
I dont know if other FSU fans share what im feeling, but if you do I salute you as well.
Ever since the morning of January 4, 2001 which we fell to OU, I have been craving to get that taste of defeat out of my mouth. I still remember the bus ride to school on Mrytle Ave, pulling into the bus zone at Stanton. I was sitting on the right side near the rear and when I got off, I was in a daze. Then seeing some of my classmates (Gator fans) tease me and other FSU fans for our team not being able to score was even more somber. I was just 15 years old at the time, but I didnt realize how deep my love was for FSU.
Throughout the years, watching Miami and Florida win a combined 3 titles and at the same time watching FSU struggle with premier bowl appearances was a difficult pill to swallow. Yes the 2 Orange Bowl apperances while I was enrolled at FSU was a feel good moment, but it was lukewarm because we lost both games respectively to Miami and Penn State (Grandpa Bowl).
Nevertheless, I still maintained my loyalty to my University while some were turning their anger and backs towards Bobby. From the beginning I always maintained a deep respect for Bowden because of his approach to the game of football, and his approach to life. During my college years, I would see him in FSU bookstore, or cafeteria and never muster up the courage to say hello. It's funny because ill never forget running into him one day at the Winn Dixie on Rohan Drive and he autographed my Human Evolution textbook. I graduated two football season before he retired, and at a time when he was catching alot of heat from some of the fans, boosters, and alums. I was scarred to voice my support of Bowden because of what was the status quo at the time. It was a either "you with us or against us" mentality at the school.
Anyone that followed the fallout from the University forcing Bowden to prematurely retire knows what impact it had on his family and his supporters.
When Jimbo took over, I will be the first to admit I wasnt supportive of him and had a skeptical feeling about him, mostly because Jimbo's nature was different from Bowden. He was always over controlling and too involved with the play calling. Ill never forget when Deckerhoff was interviewing Jimbo (cant remember exactly was it was about) and I just got this vibe that Jimbo was blowing off questions 'Hoff was asking him regarding whether he was indecisive on the QB situation regarding Lee and Weatherford when he was OC and whether he gave up on Lee too early.
Fast forward to now, and what has change some people may ask. Well, what has changed was Jimbo trusting in his QB. I have stated on here and War-chant plenty of times that Jimbo just needs to be confident in his QB and let go of the heavy handed style he initially came to the program with. This season was different because he let Winston focus on the SIMPLE things. SIMPLE things like making small quick reads that ironically led to FSU's win yesterday. He didnt have that same mentality when it came to EJ and it showed with the critial losses to NC state last season, and OU, Clemson and Wake the season before.
With all that said, this season has been an amazing one for The Florida State University, its students and fans alike. Right now, alot of people may try to discredit or devalue the accomplishment the football team has achieved, but the fact is we beat the SEC BEST team.
REJOICE FSU FANS !!! REJOICE !!!!!
