You know what? An awesome album that most people know the songs to but don't realize where they are from...
The Charlie Brown Christmas album. Seriously. Awesome.

Tesseract - Altered State
Great ambient progressive metal. Probably one of the most chill metal albums you'll ever hear.

When I think "great album," I think those rare ones, where you don't have to skip a track and can just let the whole thing play. I love those, I think .mp3's have made them even more rare, I know they have for me.
The Hold Steady "Boys and Girls in America"
Dillinger Four "Versus God"
Whiskey & Co. "Whiskey & Co." or "Nightlife"
Jeru the Damaja "Wrath of the Math"

Genesis - Genesis
It's a different kind of album for them. The first track, "Mama" was a huge hit in the UK, but not so much in the US. I think it's one of their best songs though. It's dark. It has some of the best music and especially vocals I've ever heard. Contrary to rumor, the song is not about abortion. It is about a young man obsessed with a prostitute who is not interested in him. He has an Oedipal fixation on her, and insists on calling her "Mama." It is based on a book Phil Collins read called The Moon's A Balloon, by David Niven. In the book, a young man falls in love with an older prostitute who does not return his affections.
Cool song and good album.

My favorite local band from the 80s, The Beggar Weeds. They never produced an album, just one very hard to find EP.
They never pretended to be great, they just performed, in the words of lead singer Scott Leuthold, "silly little pop songs."
They were just three guys who enjoyed each other's company, and you could tell that from their performances.

Special mention to "Tender is The Savage" by Gluecifer.

My musical tastes are all across the board.. Some really underappreciated albums in my opinion:
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend. Some really great song writing here.
A.M. Sixty - Big As the Sky. This band didn't make it big in their time, but has been discovered by marketing companies as I hear some of their tunes in commercials at least once a month.
Camper Van Beethoven - Key Lime Pie. Pre-Cracker David Lowery. Such a solid album.
Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining. A lot of people know the band, but start to finish this is a great listen.
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare. Do you consider yourself a fan of thrash metal? This is the greatest thrash album ever written. Period.
Dinosaur Jr. - Green Mind. If you are not okay with vocalists who wouldn't make it on American Idol, don't bother. Great alt guitar rock.
John Frusciante - Niandra La Des and Usually Just a T-shirt. After leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers midway through touring for the Blood Sugar Sex Magick tour, John Frusciante went to Amsterdam and did a lot of smack. To feed this addiction, he made this album. The first time I heard it I hated it, but had to listen again. Recorded on a four track, some of the most out there, haunting, experimental tunes I have ever heard. Again.. Vocals leave much to be desired, and it took me a while to appreciate it, but really powerful stuff.
I could go on for pages.. But I will hold off. For now.
