I'm still of the opinion that we'd be better off trading down. With that said, the Cleveland Browns hold multiple picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds. Suppose they offered us the following deal.....
Cleveland gets #3 overall pick from Jacksonville
Jacksonville gets #9 overall pick from Cleveland, #33 overall pick (1st pick of round 2), #65 overall pick (1st pick of round 3) and Cleveland's 7th round pick. (It works out perfectly on the NFL Trade Value Chart).
With such a deal we could probably land a pass rusher like Derek Barnett or DeMarcus Walker at #9. Possibly a RB like D'Onta Foreman at #33, an OG/C like Pat Elflein or Ethan Pocic at #35, a RT like Taylor Moton or Dion Dawkins at #65 and maybe another pass rushing DT to pair with Malik Jackson, like Jaleel Johnson at pick #67.
To me, that sounds like a great deal for both teams. We get a chance at a huge influx of talent on both lines, the Browns get 2 picks in the top 5 where they could add a QB and an elite defensive player and they still have a mid range 2nd round pick.
I'd be okay with that. Would like something in 2018 also but I like the trade
I'd take the trade, but the Browns are way too talent-starved to do something like this.
Why would the Browns trade up?
Quote:Why would the Browns trade up?
They desperately need a QB like Trubisky and given that their defense is so bad, I could see them falling in love with a D-Lineman like Allen or Garrett. Maybe they decide it would be worth it to move up and get both. I'm not saying they would actually make the deal, it's a hypothetical. If they did though, it would work out well for both teams.
It doesn't really work for the Browns since you have them pulling a move a team that thinks it's a possible contender in the next year or so would do.
I'd do that in a heartbeat.
I don't like trading down in this draft. This draft is the one that's loaded up front with studs and lacks depth. I'd rather trade up if anything (not from the #3 pick though of course).

Really? I think it's just the opposite. I believe it's loaded with depth, particularly on the defensive line, RB and CB, but I don't see any real standout players at the top that we absolutely have to have.

not really, its more a move a teamworh a lot of draft capital that wants to begin assembling franchise players would do.

The Browns have acquired a lot of picks the last 2 years to get a lot of players. They are win less, so apparently that hasn't worked for them. Maybe they change things up and look to acquire what they view as truly elite players, so they can build around them. The Eagles and Rams had a ton of needs last year and traded up in the draft. I don't see why the Browns would be exempt from such a move as well.

Garrett, Allen, McDowelll, and Fournette off the top of my head are going to be studs.

Personally, I believe that Derek Barnett, DeMarcus Walker, Hunter Dimick and Jordan Willis have just as much chance to be good pass rushers as Garrett, Allen and especially McDowell. I also believe that this RB class is loaded and there could be multiple "stars" who come from this draft.

This would be a no-brainer in my opinion. So far, Caldwell's track record with high 1st round picks is:
1 success (Ramsay)
1 total bust (joeckel)
2 TBD with Bortles leaning heavily towards bust and Fowler 50-50.
Getting the 1st pick in round 2 could lead to even more picks since the Jaguars would have more time to negotiate a trade for a stud who somehow wasn't selected in round 1. They may even land a 2018 1st rounder for that pick from a q.b. desperate team who has fallen in love with someone like Watson. The Jaguars need several upgrades so the more 2nd and 3rd rounders they get, the better. Offensive line is by far the greatest need and this draft could fix that problem in addition to strengthening other positions like tight end (bye, bye Julius).
Yes, it would be hard to pass on Garrett or Allen, but they'd have to make this deal if it was offerred.

The Browns are very much where we were at the end of 2012/beginning of 2013. They are almost literally starting from scratch, talent-wise. The Rams and Eagles both had decent defenses(Rams also had Gurley who was coming off a decent year) before trading up to grab what they feel were franchise QBs while Cleveland has nowhere near that on either side of the ball. At MINIMUM, Cleveland needs 3 OL, 1 more WR, possibly 2 TEs because of Barnidge's age, and a QB on offense. On defense, they need 1 or 2 DEs, 1 or 2 more LBs, possibly 2 corners if Haden is washed up, and 2 safeties. Nobody should really be shocked that they're winless because they're damn near an expansion team right now.

cleveland probably only needs like two lineman, center and right guard, unless they dont lock down Pryor they only need a 3rd receiver but thats not really noteworthy, and TEs constantly play unaffected into their 30s so its not an immediate need. QB/RG/C and most of the defense.

Erving was their 1st round pick last year, he hasnt played great but i doubt they give up on him already
I don't think Cleveland did all that trading for future draft picks and completely tanked this year just to trade those picks away.
I kinda like the idea of grabbing another defensive stud in the top 5 and then going OL - OL in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Good offenses have good OLs, but you don;t need to spend a top 5 pick on the OL. Draft the best RT and OG or C you can find.
