Quote:He actually fit in here pretty well given the fact that nobody could pressure the QB

Yeah he was awesome on the injury report every week. Best stretching I have seen in any training camp.
Quote:1. Derrick Harvey - Gave up a lot to get him. 8.0 career NFL sacks in less than 50 starts I believe. Last rookie to sign his deal too in 2008.

2. Blaine Gabbert - Gave up a 2nd round pick to move up to get him. Never looked like an NFL caliber QB in the pocket. Played like a coward.

3. Justin Blackmon - Teased us with potential more than Reggie and Matt ever did but couldn't overcome his demons off the field.

4. Reggie Williams - One good year in the red zone but never cracked more than 60 catches or 650 yards in a single season. He was another pot head.

5. Matt Jones - Lazy and got by with just pure athletic ability. Couldn't overcome his demons but could have been a solid player for years to come.

6. Blake Bortles - Not looking good future wise. Too many turnovers. Heavy regression this season. May never recover.

7. Luke Joeckel - 2013 had a weak first round class but he's now finished up on IR twice in his four years here in Jacksonville. Never lived up to his status.

8. R.J Soward - Another kid with the off the field demons he couldn't overcome. Doesn't sting as bad Matt, Reggie and Justin though now in our overall history.

9. Tyson Alualu - Good man on and off the field. Not really his fault he was over drafted by a whole round. But it hurts to see him with only 17.5 career sacks. Especially when we passed on Jason Pierre-Paul who has 50.0 career sacks and also Earl Thomas who has been a pro-bowl caliber FS for years now.

10. Byron Leftwich - As ugly as his mechanics and footwork were from the pocket. He's the only first round QB to ever be drafted by this franchise and leave Jacksonville with a winning record (24 - 20) during his tenure here in Jacksonville. Bortles and Gabbert combine for (15 - 53) during their tenures here.
Excellent list. The only changes I would make are:

Gabbert and Harvey switch places. Gabbert teased us with his excellent skillset for a q.b. Who would have known he would lack all the intangibles like courage in the pocket and leadership.

Alualu and Leftwich should be replaced with the 2 worst 2nd round picks in Jaguars' history- Cordell Taylor and Andre Branch.

Bortles will move up to the top 3 if he doesn't improve next year.
I have to go with a top 25...

  1. R.J Soward
  2. Cordell Taylor
  3. Blaine Gabbert
  4. Huge “Mistake” Douglas
  5. Derrick Harvey
  6. Justin Blackmon
  7. D’Anthony Smith
  8. Jerry Porter
  9. Andre Branch
  10. Luke Joekel
  11. Toby Gerhart
  12. Reggie Williams
  13. Larry Smith
  14. Dwayne Gratz
  15. Matt Jones
  16. Zane Beadles
  17. Mike Pearson
  18. Tyson Alualu
  19. Bryce Paup
  20. Ernest Givens
  21. Quentin Groves
  22. Byron Leftwich
  23. Johnathon Cyprien
  24. Ebon Britton
  25. Torry Holt
There are too many too count in our history so I'll go from Shack - Present

5. Luke Joeckel (He was everyone's sure thing, this is more on him/coaching then Caldwell)

4. Reggie Williams

3. Byron Leftwhich

2. Justin Blackmon (I had a feeling of his demise before we drafted him, his demeanor in interviews was so telling)

1. Derrick Harvey (Traded so much to get him, he was supposedly our "last" piece of the puzzle to get to a super bowl)
Derrick Harvey for the Fortune we gave up and the complete lack of talent. Reggie Williams was way over drafted considering his talent level too.

Jones and Blackmon were atleast talented enough to demand their selections.

Gabbert was way over drafted in hindsight but he's a qb and they always are.
In one way I'm glad Gabbert was as bad as he was. If he turned out only slightly below average we could have been stuck with Gene for longer. Although in that alternate universe we probably don't have Bradley as our coach either.
Quote:With apologies to anyone who might have already done this thread in the past, and realizing it probably isn't necessary ( but then neither is another 'Bortles sucks', 'fire Gus' thread ), who does everyone consider the top 10 Jaguars busts?  Project a few if you like.

Some names to consider:

Bryce Paup

Hugh Douglas

RJ Soward

Blaine Gabbart

Blackmon

Dave Caldwell's 2017 1st round pick

etc...
Matt 'Qb converted to coke head' Jones

Reggie 'can't catch' Williams

Derrick 'great run defender' Harvey
Quote:Even if this thread was created in the past, there is absolutely nothing wrong with recreating it, since the list of busts grows annually anyway.

Caldwell's ENTIRE first draft. Not a single draft pick will be on the roster in 2017.
I think Cyprien will still be here. Shoelace might be here as a third string also.

Wow I am shocked that Alualu had 17.5 career sacks. Maybe its not fair to list him as a really bad bust anymore, he just doesn't fit in with Harvey. Still a bust tho.

I agree he's not a really bad bust which is why I have him listed down at #18 alongside Bryce Paup who was also not a really bad bust.

I'm adding Derek cox for Honorable mention: The Jags indirectly gave up Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman for Derek Cox

I think Blackmon should be #1. At least Gabbert is still in the league

Blackmon's talent was undeniable. I wonder if a better coaching staff could have kept him in line. As is, he's near the top of my list.

Some of this has to come down to coaching. For example, Drayton Florence was a total bust here, but played well on other teams both before and after he was a Jag. And Julius Thomas is not being used correctly.

If we're not just including players, I'd put Gus Bradley as the worst bust by far, even ahead of Gene Smith. No single player has held the Jags back for four straight years.

Quote:No love for the Aaron Kampman pipe dream?
Sarcasm I hope?

his contract was inexpensive, especially considering he was already 31 years old AND coming off a torn ACL from his last year in Green Bay.

While he was here he had 4 sacks in 8 games and achieved FULL CONSISTENCY in pressuring the QB (so much so that Matt Roth was getting cleanup sacks from QB's trying to avoid Kampman) so essentially he averaged a sack every other game until he tore the ACL in his other knee ending his career.

no chance he should be on the all time bust list... injuries happen, this is like saying Tavian Banks was a bust because he blew out his knee and never played again.

I totally forgot about FULL CONSISTENCY!!!! Oh those were the days

Oh yea I think his talent totally warranted the #5 pick just the thought that he chose booze and weed over football is what sucks so bad

Agreed, Blackmon wasn't a bust in the classic sense, just can't be clean to be on the field due to his issues with sobriety (or lack thereof) his problems were well known before the draft and we still took him high to spite that; when he was on the field he balled out... kid had some of the best hands and body control I've ever seen. during that 4 game stretch before the final suspension he led the league in every major receiving category IIRC.

It's not like he was RJ Soward who had the substance issues AND didn't perform on the field... Soward is still the top bust IMO, although Derrick Harvey has a strong case for that honor

The memes from this board used to be absolutely magnificent haha, I'm glad people still remember... I was 91% sure everyone would've forgotten
I wish you people would stop busting on Alualu. As stated, it's not his fault that he was overdrafted, but he's been more than a serviceable player. His position is not one that garners a lot of sacks, so quit throwing that up as well. This has been stated by people that know a lt more about football than you wannabe GM's and scouts. Enough already.... Cut the guy some slack.

And no, this is not his mother...

Gene Smith and Bryan Anger.
