Didn't we just sign Lewis, the center from Texas A&M, and put him on our practice squad?

Quote:The OP said we got a fourth round pick from Detroit, not a fifth rounder. That is what confused me because I knew we did not get that for Mike Thomas - who, IIRC, is not a Lion anymore.

So we have one each in the first three rounds, two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one each in the sixth and seventh rounds, not counting compensatory picks?
Yeah sorry my bad got mixed up with which picks we've got from who etc (I blame the wine last night).

Same diff though I think we bring someone in and then later on like you say possibly also bring in another guy who has experience of playing Center and Guard for depth.

not sure how this is relevant

The same way suggestions about moving Mike Brewster to center is relevant.

He is on the active roster.

He is a rookie Center on the roster already and a decsent one from what i have read so no need to waste a draft pick on the center position if you have one you feel could replace Brad already on the roster.SMH

Do you feel he could replace Meester?

So what if he is a rookie? If we draft a center and have a preseason competition, there will be some depth at the position. Moving Mike Brewster to center is also an option, but that would leave us with a big hole at left guard.

Mike Brewster will be moved to the unemployment line. He is horrible.

I'm on the Alex Mack bandwagon.

I don't think Alex Mack fits the b- c+ free agent category which Caldwell said he's looking for.

Call me crazy, but I'm not sure we should put all our eggs in the basket of an undrafted kid who has been waived twice in one season just yet.

I don't think Mack will get to free agency, but I think that's the one position I think they'd break the bank for if they could get a very good young player at that position.
Any chance Hroniss Grasu declares? Really, really good player and based on everything I read, the guy is beloved by his teammates. The type of guy they turn to when they're in need. Sounds like the type you want in the huddle

Link?

I don't think Caldwell's first offseason, when he intended on stripping the roster bare and starting over, is a very good indication of some overall free agency philosophy.

DC: “Our plan is to find the best draft class we can, supplement with B- and C-tier free agents that can come in and play and have a coach that will help develop those guys. Alan Ball, one of our starting cornerbacks had, I think, 12 percent play time last year. Geno Hayes had less than 50 percent and has been a good linebacker for us. Eight different rookies have started for us this year. That was the plan.

Talk about high expectations. The guy just got claimed on the waiver wire.
Yeah I also wanted Barret Jones... But I'm hapoy with our first 4 picks from last year.

Keep your eyes on this kid. St. Louis was very smart nabbing him.

Interesting. I admit I hadn't read that part.

That being said I believe the next paragraph implies that there will be times and situations where picking up a premium FA may be in the cards:

“As we move forward, we’ll pick and choose spots where it’s good for us to invest in free agents while still always focusing on building through the draft.

I read it as you did. I think when Caldwell said "Our plan is to find..." What he actually meant was "Our plan was to find...", hence ending the quote with "that was the plan."

That's my best guess anyway.

I think it will be like the Falcons, whose roster is overwhelmingly made up of draft picks, but they went out and got Tony Gonzalez and John Abraham during Caldwell's time there.
