Please tell me all about how you've been watching Blake Bortles this year.  Seems like you and the rest of America found out the same week!  What a coincidence.

If you'd been paying attention, Bortles has been on this message board's radar for most of the entire year.  I'd say his coming-out-game was against Penn State at the beginning of the year.

The fastest rising QB prospect in the draft class is UCF redshirt junior Blake Bortles, according to Peter King.

"I’ve spoken to a team that’s likely to have a top 10 pick, and they like him better than any quarterback in this draft," King added. The fact that the aforementioned team could be in need of a quarterback is an important point. Borltes movement skills and strength in the pocket are reminiscent of Andrew Luck and Ben Roethlisberger. He will wait to make his announcement until after the school's bowl game against Baylor.
Quote:I love how some of you "gurus" are hopping on the Blake Bortles train like the rest of the writers in America.  You don't mention him till everybody else does.  What a load of crap.  It's so ridiculous to see him on some big boards and going top ten after one measely game.

Beat you by 1 day. Tongue

I'm already calling him a 1st rounder 10 posts down.

I have been on the Bortles Bandwagon for a while now.

I think he is the second best QB coming out this year, well if Teddy doesn't come out, I think he is the best of the class.  I'm a ucf student so I might be a little biased, but I have seen him in person a lot and he is pretty darn good.  Definitely a lot better than I originally thought he was going to be before they played any games this year.

I really, really, don't get the Bortles love affair.  He seems like he'd be a sub-par starter in the NFL.  Honestly, he looks uncomfortable in the pocket to me (and admittedly, I haven't watched a lot).

Umm, there were people on these boards (including myself) talking about Bortles as a first rounder in whatever year he declared last year. The reason he's now being talked about a lot is because it never looked like he would be in this draft class until recently.

Quote: But there's a lot more guarantee your getting a top pass rusher than a franchise qb.
Not sure if you purely mean this year or just in general, but there are good studies out there that show that there is a higher bust rate for top 10 DEs than QBs. There have been just as many (at a higher rate at least) Courtney Brown/Jamal Reynolds/Gaines Adams/Jamaal Anderson/etc. as there have been QB busts.

If you were talking about purely as an analysis of this years crop though then that's different.

Wouldn't another season in College really do him a ton of good though? Not necessarily in terms of his draft stock, but his long-term potential. I like the guy, and I love that he's a gamer but I feel like he would grow so much with one more season.

Why?

After his bowl game he will have already played 36 collegiate games.  There's not a whole lot more for him in college unless he honestly thinks he can win a national title.

Reps. Reps are key for a Quarterback. Even against the cupcakes and the Div III schools. The more exposure he has to the game the better.

Dangit! I'm trying to find that QB "rule" that states that very, very few QB's who do not play in something like 45 games with a 60% completion percentage are successful in the NFL but I can't locate it. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I know what you are talking about, although its probably a lower number of games.  You realize playing 45 games in college is playing almost every game for 4 years?

I think another year certainly would help, but he's not as raw as other QBs like Manziel, Mariota or Hundley. Can't blame the guy if he declares if he's an early day 2 pick at worst.

Yeah, I knew the number was high when I wrote it, but oh well. Was it thirty games and a 60% completion percentage? Is that right?

I wouldn't blame him, and I understand why he would go. I just think that his level of play would really benefit from another college season.

go to nfl draft breakdown and watch his game against South Carolina, keep in mind that his OL is way outmatched by their DL

This... this dude has so much hype with little to support it. Teddy won't be available. Get Clowney then get McCarron / Murray / Boyd and go from there. Anyone will be better than what we currently have. If they arent... 2015 will have Winston / Mariota / whoever else stays or shows up.

26 on the wonderlic 27 starts 60% completion. That's the theory Wink

I meant this year..specifically clowney and Barr over Carr or bortles etc.

I completely agree and I think last years class proves how easily 'top pass rushers' can not succeed in the nfl.

well, he did lead UC freaking F to a BCS game

and he has the traits that you look for in a QB, good size, mobility, strong in the pocket
