People need to understand the best thing to do on first and 1 depends on who your running back is and if you don't make it there, you have two more chances to get in the end zone.

Again, running up the middle wouldn't guarantee a touchdown, but the odds of making it are very, very, very high (IT'S 1 YARD). Running a sweep is less likely to work than going up the middle for ONE YARD. You don't even have to run it in! You can jump! Even Henne could've gotten it with a sneak!

Since 'many posters believe that running up the middle would guarantee that we score on first down', could you please point out just one of them?  Just one.

If it had worked, I doubt a lot of people would say that. What made it look stupid was the execution. Also, if we had made it on second or third down, it would not matter.

If it would have worked I would have said that we got lucky. As the play was developing I was thinking that now is no time to get cute, it's time to play hard-nosed football.
