What's up guys. I just finished writing up an analysis on Bortles. Head on over to blackandteal to check it out.

Thoughts?

I read Bortles has not decided yet if he wants to leave school a year early. Until he declares, I will pay no attention to him.

How you know what plays he checked out of and which ones he didnt, or are those numbers from a coach or something?
Oh wow I didn't know he was a redshirt sophomore.  That rules him out as prospect this year imo.  Has he declared for the draft?  I don't see why he would so early.

I honestly think it makes no sense for him to go pro now.  I feel like he just got on the draft potential radar.  He needs to stay in school, develop his game, and improve his draft stock.  I mean, two more good years at UCF and he could be a top 10 pick.  Right now, there is no way he goes in the first round.  0 chance.

Redshirt junior
FWIW:

Quote:<div>ESPN analyst Brian Griese said during Saturday's UCF-SMU game that redshirt junior QB Blake Bortles was his No. 1 quarterback prospect in the 2014 NFL Draft.

ESPN college football analyst Todd McShay ranks Bortles as the second-best quarterback in the draft pool and the 14th-best overall player.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback was recruited as a tight end and still possesses the size, strength and athleticism he did back then.  "He has great size and mobility," NFL Media draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah said.  "He doesn't have a huge arm, but it's plenty strong enough to make all the throws. The early background reports are glowing."

He isn't a first round talent.  Todd McShay is smoking wacky weed.

Whenever you have to constantly talk about "size, strength, athleticism" for a quarterback, then its a problem imo.  I don't know why scouts still use "size" as a measurement for QBs.  It means nothing as long as they are above 5'9".

But but but he looks like a Big Ben Rapistburger/Andrew Luck clone, No?  That means he also has their skill set does it not?

Finally someone agrees with me being a short QB is OK. However, that 5-9 quarterback needs to be faster than his wide receivers to avoid getting hit all the time and still needs to weigh over 200 pounds to take lots of hits. I would not say a quarterback's size means nothing. Not all short quarterbacks are like Doug Flutie. But I do think QB size is overrated because I am only 5-3, so it looks crazy to me when people say 6-1 is short lol.

Strength and athleticism are very important considerations, however. A weak quarterback can't make people miss tackles to avoid a sack. Athleticism means he can do a lot more than simply call plays and throw the ball; he can do everything.

Are you referring to their size, strength, and athleticism or their actual skill sets? You have to compare quarterbacks based on the whole picture, not just their SSA.
Good write up. Anyways I just don't see anything special with Bortles, I'd rather have Brett Hundley, he is very raw but he has way more potential.  But i wouldn't touch either until the second round.

The bolded statement is exactly why we should not pick Brett Hundley. We need a guy who is ready to start in Week 1.

Also, Hundley has not declared yet, so it is too early to think about him as a prospect.

The more I see and read on him - I think he should stay in school another year.  He'd probably be an early second rounder this year IMO - but it's hard to guess that at this point as these guys projections will change plenty between now and draft day.

Who are you, the declare police?

LOL I am just stating the facts. Why do people talk about guys who have not decided yet if they want to declare? Case in point: Everybody was talking about Marcus Mariota; then he decided to finish school. Same for Andrew Luck three years ago and Christian Ponder before that. But all this time people talk about players who are on the fence about declaring, not one of them talks about Bradley Roby, who has indicated he will declare and got support from Urban Meyer.
He's not really ready right now, but that's never stopped someone with his potential from going real early if the reasonable expectations of reaching them are there. His fixes are almost exclusively experience based IMO, not mechanics or acuity related. Top half of the first round prospect if he declares, and probably top 10.

Ok sorry, will fix the whole junior thing in a bit.

My criteria for an adjustment includes shifting the formation or assigning a hot block or hot route to beat pressure. Both happened in this game to account for Clowney.

Just as an aside, I hate doing pro comparisons but:

Floor: Jake Locker

Current: bigger, faster, more accurate Andy Dalton.

Ceiling: (I know it's mainstream )poor man's Andrew Luck.

I don't talk about Roby because I'm still learning how to scout defensive backs. Nothing against him or OSU.
I'm still on the fence with Bortles and Carr.
