I like the spirit of not treating Newton different, but I don't know about this.

Its stupid that the rule even exists in the first place.
Opps, this was supposed to be in NFL general. Ironically fitting in the draft/old college category. Its the kind of thing you would see in college.

Why is the rule stupid?

Because it serves no purpose.

Neither does Carolina's rule that no player can have a tattoo.
Sitting your star player for a drive for this reason is really dumb.  You should be able to find other reasons to discipline him.

TC's old approach seemed to work the best.  Hit them where it hurts, the pocket book....but the nflpa probably took care of that.

Stupid or not, the rule exists, and Newton was aware of it.  Coaches instill accountability and discipline in different ways.

Tom Coughlin had a 5 minute rule for meetings when he was here.  If the player wasn't there 5 minutes before the meetings started, they were considered late, and subject to team imposed fines.  Players learned very quickly to show up early for all meetings.  It sounds like Rivera wants his team to look like professionals when they're traveling.  Considering some of the ridiculous stuff Newton has worn to press conferences, it had to be pretty blatant whatever it was.

Teams can still issue fines for violations of internal rules.

it wasnt anything "blatant", he wore a black turtleneck instead of a button up. Nothing unprofessional about it.

Doesn't blatant mean it was an obvious and intentional violation? We use that word all the time for DPI penalties where the CB was grabbing the receiver's arm or trying to hug him.
