It's Barr vs Carr in a possible bowl game.

Mack is like Jarvis Jones, but with actual athleticism and strength and without a spinal problem. True or false?

Not a comparison. Mack is a great player, Jarvis was the most overhyped, under athletic, one dimensional pass rusher of the last few years.

I'll eat some crow. I was gunning hard for Jarvis or Dion last year. Didn't turn out well.

I don't think some people realized how small he was too. They were comparing him to Von Miller but Miller has bulked up to 270. Jones just did not have that frame. And Miller was faster.

I think we need to share that crow. I was big on Jarvis..i liked how he could rush and drop back into coverage well. I've seen him do it really well a few times this year..but not well enough of frequent enough for a first round top 15 pick.

With Barr or Mack, you are talking about two tweeners that will not have the DE size to pass-rush in the NFL and will not have the pass-coverage skills of a true NFL linebacker.

 

Their size limits them to OLB in a 3-4 defense, and if their speed numbers are correct, they lack the ideal speed for ILB.

 

IF the Jaguars draft either where are they going to get a 3-4 nose guard? You are talking about re-tooling the entire defense.

 

Tweeners at linebacker are no match for NFL offensive tackles and typically do not have powerful pass-coverage skills beyond floating backwards in soft zone.

 

Nothing wrong with drafting the best pure LB available or drafting the best pure DE available provided they are, indeed, the best player available over-all when we pick. 

 

Dion Jordan? Jarvis Jones? Quentin Coples? Melvin Ingram? Yada yada yada

I only watched that game off and on. But he had at least one sack.

I see a lot of upside with this kid. Hard to believe he only started playing on the defensive side last year.

That's different from what was being said about Jones before last years draft. The majority of folks on here was in love with that stiff. Only two players I thought it was worth the 2nd pick in the draft was Star and Ansah. The rest of the draft was bland. I guess Joeckel was a decent pick but I've not seen enough of him yet. I'm just tired of spending high picks on tackles that's only here for four years at a time then are gone.

The evaluation saavy people didn't like Jarvis by any means. Most people did because OMG SEC SACKZZZ, not because of his actual traits. I said over and over I wouldn't have even taken him with our second round pick. 

 

I also didn't want Joeckel at RT (fine value at LT but still meh) and still wish the pick was one of Star, Dion, Ansah, Mingo, or Geno.

I wasn't onboard with Joeckel at the time, but I think he's a stud now. And of five guys you listed, I think the only ones who have actually been productive are Star and Ansah. They've been wrecking shop.

Barr is a physical beast whos sacks come in bunches. I'm interested to see if he is big enough to play at the next level. I see his strength being a concern.

I thought Star or Ansah would've been perfect, but I understand why they went Joeckel

 

as far as Mack vs Barr, I'd give Barr the slight edge because I think he has better speed, but haven't watched either player that much tbh
