It's not looking real good for Henne and the Jags on the passing front this week.
Shorts and Sanders seem to be the only sure things. Stephen Burton, Kerry Taylor and Stephen Williams are each banged up. One or two of them might be cleared - but we don't know yet. Brown will likely be out.
I expect we'll see the Jags try really hard to get the run going against Houston and involve Lewis/Harbor/Noble when possible. Shorts may be looking for targets, but he'll likely have to get open against Joseph to be productive. Could be interesting....
Our receiving corp will be alright as long as Henne can deliver the ball...
NH3...
I think we might see Lamaar Thomas and Kerry Taylor out there as the #3 and #4 guys. Probably not an ideal situation. Hopefully one of them surprises....
Kerry Taylor looked pretty good running his routes was wide open a couple times
i like what ive seen from burton, hopefully he gets better soon, he needs more game experience.

Welp there goes that then.
Crazy how fast strengths turn to weaknesses in the NFL. Not like it matters, all teams....anyways

So you're saying it's not going to be alright.
:whistling:
It's a matter of whether or not we run actual offensive plays or just stick with the broken record game plan. Hear me out...
Yeah, Henne stinks we know that.
But if all we are gonna do is run 2 pass plays over and over again (RB screen, WR bubble screen) with only slight variations (strong side, weak side) than our WRs are going to look horrible.
If we actually allow the offense to run multiple plays for short, intermediate, and long routes, then we might just (gasp) get the defense guessing and off-balance.
I've noticed that in the first couple drives we appear unpredictable to the opposing D's. Then they begin to realize we are running the same dang plays over and over again, and they begin to tee off on us.
Why not just open up the play book? If we do that, I'm sure CSIII will get more involved, same with Sanders and the rest of the crew.
Plus, we have TE's, we can try to use them as well. But if we just run the same short yardage garbage over and over again, it's not gonna be the WRs that are to blame. It'll be the OC.

Open up the playbook? Here's a secret: There's only two plays in there.

The OC is severely limited by the O-line play. Henne at QB doesn't help. I think Fisch would do well with a QB that can throw downfield and an O-line that can give him another .5 seconds to do it. Fisch and Bradley have said several times they had to shrink the playbook due to lack of execution.
Yup we saw what happened when Gabbert tried to go deep on the colts and Gabbert has a better arm than hennes
Hennes is better in the pocket and reads the coverage better but he limits what we can do
Our pass protection has been better if not perfect lately but our lack of run game is limiting the risks we can take
you only take those shots Downfield (if you can't hit them reliably) on first down or second however if you miss you need your run game to be reliable enough to give you third and short
We are lucky if we get two yards a carry right now

I don't think it was "motion" that was the key to the TD. It was the fact that the D was off balance and expecting run. But that's just me. I mean, if you are predictable, you'll get stuffed. On that play, we did the opposite of what the D was expecting. We saw that play once and it worked. I'm sure there are other plays we have in Fisch's iPod.
As for shrinking the playbook due to lack of execution: That just sounds silly. Hey I have an idea, why not use practice to get better at your plays? I get it, we have weaknesses on the O-line and QB. But the mentality that we should shrink the play book in order to run those few plays to perfect execution may work in High School ball, but it won't fly in the NFL. Once D's know what you're doing, you're toast. As is evident in every single game so far this season. We come out looking kinda good on offense. Then the D figures us out, and we begin getting stuffed come the 2nd Quarter and beyond.
I say run more plays, keep the D guessing. Even if we get sacked more or have more interceptions, what ever... It's not like going 3 and out all the time is a recipe for winning. Just my opinion.
i think shorts will have a big game, even if most of it comes in garbage time. he was vocal about not getting more involved in the game plan last week and will put up this week.

You missed the point of the link. You said "use the TEs." That play was a 3 TE set. Something Fisch likes to use but hasn't had the personnel to run until recently.
In response to the quote above. All of this predictability you are talking about would go away if the Jags could average more than 2.7 yards per carry. You can't be very unpredictable when your offense is one dimensional. I think your frustration with a crappy offense on the field is making you blame Fisch for more than he deserves credit for.
Alas - it's your prerogative to dislike the OC and this thread is supposed to be about the WRs.

We may have relative "newbs" out there in the #3 and #4 spots this week. (Taylor and Thomas) Taylor is even among those banged up. (toe) Thomas would have to be activated from the PS. He was a waiver claim from the Broncos.
Shorts/ Sanders will need to really shine if the running game continues to struggle.
Brown and Burton did not practice today.

Quote:Fisch said if Brown can’t play, Kerry Taylor will play a significant role. Cecil Shorts III is expected to start at one receiver, with rookie Ace Sanders possibly starting opposite Shorts and Taylor also playing extensively.
With Burton not practicing and Stephen Williams (Achilles) limited Thursday, Jeremy Ebert could be signed from the practice squad. “If he (Brown) can go, he’ll be able to go,” Fisch said. “He’s extremely smart and understands the game. He understands what we’re trying to get done, so even without practicing, he would be able to play. If not, Kerry Taylor will be in there.’"
*Taylor, who signed with the Jaguars November 4 off the Arizona practice squad, was inactive against Tennessee and caught two passes for 20 yards against Arizona Sunday. “You never want to see a teammate get hurt, but when that is part of the sport, you know that’s your opportunity to step up and make a name for yourself,” Taylor said.
*Fisch said the Jaguars are accustomed to adjusting at receiver this season. Not only has Justin Blackmon missed six games because of suspension, Brown has missed four and Sanders has missed one. Shorts also missed much of the Denver games with an AC joint injury. “We’ve had a revolving door,” Fisch said….
So it looks like - Shorts/Sanders/ Taylor/Ebert.

hopefully Ebert or Taylor steps up.
Quote:I miss Shipley. .
lol no crap right? It was about this time last year that we didnt know what we were doing at wide out and he stepped it up at the end of last season. Maybe they should bring him back considering he's familiar with the playbook and seemed to have better hands than half the people we have filling in now
