Quote:Flacco well....simply put...fails to impress. I'm not saying he sucks, but he needs to play at his best just to manage games. He's better than the likes of say Carson Palmer, but the Ravens are probably already regretting his new contract.

He did well in the playoffs and super bowl didn't he? I wouldn't put him in the Trent Dilfer/Brad Johnson/Jim Mcmahan game managers who won a SB category.

Indeed Flacco made some nice throws in the postseason last year, but he had a mediocre regular season, and so far this year he's been nothing but mediocre.

I think that team as a whole has been a disappointment. They let way too many of their good players leave, including Anquan Boldin who was easily Flacco's most reliable target. Then they lost Pitta to injury, so he really only has Ray Rice and Torrey Smith as weapons on offense. Then there's that completely different defense...

But like I've said, I don't think he is an all time great or even one of the greats playing today. However, I would take him in a heartbeat and be perfectly okay with our QB position.

Quote:I wouldn't call Keenum a one trick pony. He's athletic and has one heck of an arm. But I'll reserve judgement until I see how he does this week vs the Cards secondary.

His best attribute is his quick release..  SNF timed it.  He gets the ball off in .33 seconds which is one of the best releases in the game.

Also I don't see how willing to throw it down field and challenge a defense makes him a "one trick pony".. isn't that what you want out of your QB? "One trick ponies" are those that down have that ability and can only check down or throw intermediate passes.  That is the entire reason why he's now starting over Matt Schaub.. who would never challenge defenses.. Hence why Matt Schaub is now the record holder for consecutive pick 6's.  Corners stopped fearing his ability to challenge them deep so they would just squat on routes.  Through injury or declining skills (which were already limited to begin with) Schaub turned into the definition of a "game manager".. and then turned into a bad game manager once defenses realized they didn't have to fear getting beat over the top.  That and corners realized they didn't have to cover long, because Schaub wears concrete shoes.  Case's ability to scramble around and buy extra time for his receivers to get open down field is another reason why the big play ability has returned to this offense..  His skill set if very similar to a Russell Wilson. The guy who beat out Matt Flynn

There's a reason why Andre Johnson is now looking like he's in the middle of his prime and has spoke highly of Keenum instead of Schaub. Schaub has cost Andre countless TDs over the years (Andre Johnson has caught as many TD passes playing 2 games with Keenum as he did the previous 20 playing with Schaub).  Schaub would just check down for the safe throw.. once defenses figured that out he was done here.  However just because Keenum will go for the homerun and challenge deep, that doesn't mean that is all he is able to do.  He can throw underneath too if nothing is down field.

He's only had two starts and he's off to a great start.. since he's only had two starts he only has room to improve as he gets more playing time/experience.

I really love the story. It's not quite Kurt Warner-esque. More like Tony Romo, but more so because he is a local boy turned good. Played college at Houston, now the QB of the Houston Texans. Really cool. I'm conflicted because Y'all are in our division, but I'm still rooting for him to succeed.

And I picked him to replace Aaron Rodgers in my money league. Wink

I started Keenum vs the Colts in my fantasy league when my QB had a bye week.  Worked out pretty well.

I'm not taking Flacco with his current contract. No thanks.

On top of everything you expressed is the following information.    The Ravens Offensive Line and overall blocking is not getting the job done through this point of the season.

When Joe Flacco had a much more effective supporting cast,  he was able to win 9 playoff games in his first 5 seasons.  Flacco isn't a top 5 QB in the NFL but he is someone who has clearly been a very important part of winning formulas for the Ravens.

Flacco should've gave half his signing bonus to the Broncos' defensive back that allowed Jacoby Jones get behind him.

Yet,  to Joe Flacco's credit,  he took advantage of the opportunity that presented itself.   The Ravens still had to win the game in OT and then go on to win the AFC Championship game in New England and the Super Bowl against a very talented SF 49ers team.

Still that play should've never happened.. even with Tom Brady or Manning under center.  If that mental mistake never happens none of the other stuff happens and Flacco doesn't break the bank.

Flacco has always played over his head in the playoffs though..  He's been like a poor man's Eli Manning.

I totally agree the play shouldn't have happened.     Yet,  considering Joe Flacco's rocket arm strength,  he was well suited to effectively execute the play once Broncos S Rahim Moore was out of position.

Being that the Ravens are the only NFL team to qualify for the playoffs the previous 5 seasons and he's performed at a high level in the playoffs,   his value is magnified.

While Joe Flacco probably wouldn't have been offered the contract terms if the Broncos would have held on to defeat the Ravens in the 2nd Round of the playoffs,   the Ravens still needed to find a way to keep Flacco long term.  If the Ravens were forced to use the Franchise Tag on Flacco,  they would have probably had to use the exclusive Franchise Tag on him.   Otherwise,  a team like the division rival Browns,  with a boatload of Salary Cap space,  easily could have made Flacco an offer the Ravens wouldn't have been able to match.   The two 1st Round picks the Ravens would have received as compensation if they lost Flacco in that scenario wouldn't have solved the Ravens QB situation for at least the short term.    It's far from a given it would have led to an effective long term replacement for Flacco.

and despite qualifying for that many playoff appearances.. he still had to play for another contract..  Tom Brady or Manning.. or other QBs he's paid like, would not have had to do that.

I'm not saying he sucks.. he simply isn't worth the salary he gets paid, but that's the nature of the beast.  Good starting caliber QBs are hard to find so a lot of times teams are stuck having to over pay for some of them.  Still though, he should cut Moore a check or at least take him out to dinner.  His mistake (something that is drilled in your head from High School on) literally gave Flacco millions of dollars.

Taking Joe Flacco out of the discussion,   I strongly agree with the following that you expressed:

Good starting caliber QBs are hard to find so a lot of times teams are stuck having to over pay for some of them.

The demand for good starting caliber QB's noticeably is greater than the supply.  Coupling with that with the ultra importance of the QB position on the NFL level,   agents and their good starting caliber QB clients,  have tremendous leverage in contract negotiations.
What are the Bears going to do if Cutler starts demanding Flacco money?

Quote:What are the Bears going to do if Cutler starts demanding Flacco money?

Unless Jay Cutler plays at a high overall level the remainder of this season,   my guess is they won't be willing to pay him Joe Flacco type of money.

If that happens,  the Bears plan probably will be to use the non-exclusive Franchise Tag on Cutler.   With the purpose of hoping he signs with another team,  hence getting 2 first round picks for him.   If Cutler signs the tender offer or the Bears conclude no other team will sign Cutler to an offer sheet,  they probably will try to trade Cutler.

While Josh McCown is in his mid 30's,  my guess is the Bears would be comfortable with him as the short term starter until the 1st or 2nd Round pick they would use to select a QB of the Future is ready to ascend to the starting position.

In this deep draft that doesn't really have a slam dunk franchise guy... but a LOT of promising QB prospects, I think they'll spend a pick on one and work on developing him just in case..   As long as it isn't a Dan Lefevour type guy.. right TMD? Smile

This is something that's easy to envision.   Especially since Marc Trestman has an extensive and successful background of developing QB's.

Regarding Jay Cutler,  he displayed tremendous toughness by remaining in the game against the Lions until late in the contest.    Being that Cutler reportedly suffered an ankle injury in addition to the groin injury he entered the game with,   it will be interesting to see whether it's Cutler or Josh McCown who starts vs. the Ravens next Sunday.   On the Bears final drive,  McCown once again displayed that he's more than capable of putting up points.   With Cutler's mobility limited much of the day and the injuries piling up,  including on his non throwing hand..............as the Lions were getting plenty of pressure on him,    I'm surprised Trestman waited as long as he did to remove Cutler.
Kubiak pulled him in the third in a winnable game and stuck Schaub in. Andre and Schaub got in to it after a failed 4th down attempt in to the endzone with 1 minute left that would have won it, and Johnson walked off the field.

Texans are in full meltdown mode.
