Full Version: Time to start rooting for some losing teams

After Week 12, these are the worst teams by record:

Cleveland Browns (0-12)

San Francisco 49ers (1-10)

Jacksonville Jaguars (2-9)

Chicago Bears (2-9)

New York Jets (3-8)

Obviously I don't want the Jaguars to lose out for draft picks. That idea is ridiculous. So what I like to do instead is root for other teams with similar or worse records in hopes they will drop in the draft order.

However, based on our remaining schedule (Broncos, Vikings, Texans, Colts), it is unlikely we win one of the next two or three games. I know despite the old "any given Sunday" cliche winning all four would be as miraculous as a 3-6 expansion team making the playoffs. So here I go again, hoping the 49ers and a couple other teams with less than five wins help us move up in the draft by winning their games.

This starts with the 49ers. We can leapfrog them in the draft order if they win more games. Also, keep in mind our win at Chicago has no effect on which current two-win team picks first.

It really doesn't matter since there is no standout player in this draft. The only difference it might make is if we finish ahead of Cleveland (which is a log shot since they are so bad.) They desperately need a QB and are rumored to be in love with Mitch Trubisky, so they might be willing to give up a lot in order to trade up and secure him. In that case, we could get more picks to move down just 1 or 2 positions. If not, I'd still like to trade down and target RB D'onta Foreman of Texas. I believe the kid is a game changer who can totally change the look of our offense as long as we use the next few picks (and perhaps free agency) to build the O-line. Then I would target a pass rusher anywhere in the 3rd to 5th rounds where there will still be some quality players. Two guys I like alot are Jordan Willis of Kansas State and Josh Carraway of TCU. Willis is 6'5" 250 lbs. and has 11 sacks and 15 TFL this year. Over the past 2 seasons he has a combined 21 sacks and 30 TFL. Carraway is 6'4" 250 lbs. and has 9 sacks and 11 TFL in 2016. Over the last 2 seasons he has a combined 18 sacks and 22 TFL. I also like a small school prospect named Derek Rivers of Youngstown State. He's 6'5" 250 lbs and has 11 sacks and 14.5 TFL this season and a combined 20 sacks and 30 TFL over the last 2 seasons.

Honestly, I'm so numb to this losing for draft position.  This year has be a major disappointment, I dont even care where they pick or who right now

We have so many shortcomings on this team, even one elite player isn't going to make much of a difference. We need help in many different areas. QB play has to improve, O-Line play has to get much better, RB play has to get alot better, we need a FB who can help open running lanes, we need much more of a consistent pass rush, we need better pass coverage from the linebacking position and we lack a real threat in the return game. Not to mention that we lack depth on the O-Line, D-Line, CB, linebacker and Safety positions. We're not going to be able to address all these needs in one offseason.

Agreed. I came into this season with such hope, but just like everything else this past year has brought, it's been nothing but one big letdown. This has probably been one of the worst years of my life and this team's losing has just been the cherry on top of a giant $h#t sundae.
I've rooted for a losing team for years.

It doesn't matter where you pick unless you need a QB which we might, but I'm not ready to give up on Blake just yet. Just get the pick right is all.
Other than last year with the Ramsey pick...when was the last time we got the first round pick right?

Fred? Maybe Monroe? God, that's depressing to think about.
Boselli?

I would love for us to have the number one pick. Everyone knows Gus will be fired after this season. I don't see us winning anymore games if we continue to play poorly on offense. I will also be rooting for the Browns and 49ers. With the number one pick we can trade down be in the top 5 and accumulate many draft picks.

Stroud and Henderson were the last two studs.  I think Fowler deserves a bit more time.  And there's at least a glimmer that Bortles can be decent with better coaching.

I found an interesting article about how four Week 14 games can determine the draft order. They are:

Bengals at Browns

Jets at 49ers

Vikings at Jaguars

Bears at Lions

That would be ideal.

We can trade down from any pick number. Clinching the top pick would make a difference, however.

There is one thing to keep in mind while rooting for the Browns and 49ers: their SOS. Do they have easier or harder schedules than ours?
Think San Fran may pick up a win this Sunday......

It is their most winnable remaining game.

Yep, I've been rooting for a losing team all season long so far.

Me too. I never thought I would be rooting for more than one losing team this season.
