Quote:In the eyes of people who only care about whether Michigan is playoff worthy or not, only the fact that Iowa is unranked matters. In fact the Hawkeyes have been an afterthought since dropping out of the rankings in September.

You don't know that.

Yes I do. I have been paying close attention to the CFP rankings (which is obvious to you because I started most threads about it).
Looks like its,

1. Alabama

2. Clemson

3. Washington

4. Penn st

Ohio st doesn't belong there, they aren't conference champion.

Penn State still has more losses than Ohio State.
Quote:Non-conference (or non-division) games in the NFL or other sports are at least relatively equal.  In college football there is a vast discrepancy. I'm not sure you could get much buy in to award conference champions based on overall record.  I think part of the reason why Ohio St is locked in at #2 above Penn St is they crushed a good Oklahoma team on the road.  Penn St lost to a solid but inconsistent Pitt team in what essentially was neutral a site matchup.

** plus I do find it somewhat odd that in the NFL you could lose every single division game and yet still win your division.  But at least the non-division schedule is the exact same save for two games.

One way of at least partially getting around what you mentioned as an obstacle is for the Conferences to schedule the games out of conference a couple of years in advance in the most balanced way possible.   The schools would have input but it ultimately would be up to Conference decision makers to make the final call.

Penn State still has a win over OSU on their resume along with a conference championship.

A case can be made for either school.    The current system is broken in that it's way too subjective.

Exactly.

I'm fine with them choosing either Penn State of Ohio State this season.

Under the current system,  one,  not both,  should advance to the 4 team playoff.

Therein likes the problem. It needs to be an eight team playoff.

Agree.
Not many surprises last night.  And no huge performances other than Bama hanging half a hundred on a solid defense.

Unless the committee does an about face, have to think top 4 remain Bama, Ohio St, Clemson and Washington.  If Clemson and Washington's resumes were better last week, their games this weekend didnt make those resumes any worse.  And nobody below them did anything to jump up.  If Penn St had blown Wisconsin out the way Ohio St did a couple years ago in the Big10 championship game, then you could make a better argument.  But winning a close game shouldnt be enough to bump them up with those two losses.

Seems like a lot of folks are upset about Penn St and Ohio St, but I'm not.  Ohio St has a better record against a harder schedule.  You can make a compelling argument that they have the best resume in the country.  When the season started, everyone knew the criteria was to be one of the four best teams, not one of the four best conference champions.  That means every single game you play has to matter.  You have to give Penn St credit for righting the ship and playing well at the end of the year but you have to look at their entire body of work.  Yes Penn St beat Ohio St.  But it wasnt an overly convincing win where you walked away thinking they are clearly better.  And head to head only matters when you have comparable resumes.  But they dont have comparable resumes.  Ohio St has a harder strength of schedule and only one loss which was on the road against a top 10 team due to some fluky bounces.  Penn St has two losses to lesser teams, one of which was by 40 points.  So why does Ohio St get punished for their one loss while Penn St's two losses get ignored?  And if we are picking and choosing which games matter, why should Penn St get in over Michigan?  If we are ignoring Penn St's two losses, let's ignore Michigan's two losses and focus on that 40 point beatdown they put on Penn St.  People act like Penn St was fielding their JV team due to injuries but in reality they were just missing their LBs.  Those LBs werent worth 40 points.  Michigan thoroughly dominated them in every single fashion.  But we'll see what happens with the committee.  Maybe they have a change of heart and maybe that title will sway them enough to overlook Penn St's two losses.  But my guess is no.

5 and 6 I have to think will be Penn St and Michigan in some order.  Obviously anything behind 4 doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things, but if you were comparing head to head results, you have to have Michigan ahead of Penn St right?  Or does the Big10 championship trump head to head?

7 is probably going to be OU.  Im guessing 8 and 9 will be USC and Wisconsin in some order.  Maybe USC gets ranked higher as they've been on such a roll all year.  And I'm hoping Colorado rounds out the top 10.  Theyve had a good year and deserve it.  All of their losses are to teams that will be ranked top 10 by years end.  And the Michigan/USC losses were close coupled with having their QB out.

Penn State coming back from 28-7 to 38-31 was a surprise. I thought Wisconsin was dominating that game.

Then again, the Nittany Lions have done it before . . . against my Buckeyes, unfortunately.
