Us dumb fans don't know anything. Watching Gabbert's games is there anything that jumps out at you aside from the arm?

Quote:Dude, put your tinfoil back on they are zeroing in on you.

Im just sayin.
Quote:Why???? Why??? When I watch college tape on gabbert and see exactly what I see now. Terrible footwork, absolutely no awareness of the pass rush, very little command presence did we draft this guy??? There were bye my count 3 other qbs available who had shown the above mentioned qualities that gabbert lacked but still we drafted him? How can u draft someone because they may develop into a decent qb when a better qb is available at that point???Flash foreward to the upcoming draft and there are Atleast 6 qbs who look light years ahead of how gabbert looked in college. There are qbs who pump fake, consistently audible at the line, sense pressure and make good descissions when the pressure is there, look off safeties, have command presence .... I may be missing something our draft team saw???? But I don't think so. So please ... Someone explain to me why we drafted gabbert. And FYI???? I think we could win 3 to 5 games this year and pick 4 th or. 5 th. And still get a qb who is immediaey better than gabbert .
What I have realized is that GMs all have different ways of evaluating players. Some look base the players play solely on game tape, some on measurables, some on the combination of the two obviously I'm no scout so this is just through observation for me but it seem that Gene was a measurable guy. He focused more on what the player looked like in body wise than skill set. The best example I can think of recently is Russell Wilson. Had he been 4-6 inches taller he would have been a top 3 pick but being 5'10 he was over looked by everyone and because of that many teams have missed out on a potential franchise qb.

I wont lie and say what it the proper way to evaluate is but to me the eye test seems to be the best way. If they look like they can play in the game chances are they can play in the game. Blaine on the other hand has never shown any flashes of amazing play. I remember in 2011 a friend and I were talking about the qb class that was coming in and talking about our favorites. We both agreed on Andy being they best because when we watched him play all of his passes were directly to the wide receiver. No one had to stretch for passes or you never saw a lot of amazing grabs from his wr's because they were right where their hands were to make a sure handed catch. 'Im sure you can guess who our least favorite was.

Blaine never flashed any amazing play making ability, no big time stats, no exquisite accuracy or anything. He just looked like a tall guy with a big arm and that's all he turned out to be. The issue with qb is that you really never know who will be good or not so you just draft a guy and hope for the best. That's what Gene did. He played the game and failed. Im only 25 so I only have a small sample of football to go on outside of rewatching old classic games, but Blaine is the worst quarter back I have ever watched since I started watching football in 1995 maybe Jonathan Quinn is worse but he was a 6th rounder. He has zero command of the game. It's just to much for him. He has the ability and maybe in a better situation were he could have sat for 2-3 years he might have turned out better but right now it's just not in him.
Quote:Does anyone know if GS ever found work in football? Just curious.
Yes he is a stocker at Publix in mandarin.
I heard it was because he could throw a football in a garbage can.... ironic huh

Sadly, Quinn was actually a third rounder. One of the worst picks in team history.

I wonder if he has to reach for any cans on the job?

Sorry to show my youth on that post as you are correct. It possibly was but Anger or all of the 2012 draft class might take that cake now.

Why Why Why did Gene Smith draft a person that operated 100% out of the shotgun when he emphatically stated the year before that a QB could not succeed who operated out of the shotgun in college football.
Gabbert wasn't quite the coward in college that he is in the NFL.   Somewhere on the flight to Jacksonville after being drafted, his courage got ripped out from his body.

Quote:Sadly, Quinn was actually a third rounder. One of the worst picks in team history.

Quinn was another guy drafted on measurables/ arm strength.

I remember Quinn having one of the worst deep balls ever. Garrard-like. No arc. Thus he was never able to put the ball over one defender and have it come down to the receiver, if it was over the defender it was over everyone. He would miss wide open deep seam TE's all the time with this.

Its also why QB that actually have touch on their throws is an important overlooked attribute.
Quote:Wouldn't that be,amazing if we could claim a refund...

Hi yeah I'm not happy with my Gabbert

I'm sorry about that sir what seems to be the problem

Every time I get within 5feet of it or apply any kind of pressure it just shuts down

Ahhh yes we thought that bug would have been sorted in the secomd offseason update or after the joeckel patch I'll arrange a replacement.... Sorry we haven't got any gabberts in stock I could upgrade to a Bridgewater for a 5th

how much for a tebow

Sir there's no need to be rude

This completely made my day! Well done sir!
I understand .... Precieved possible potential of a player... But in still want to bang my head against a hard wall when I see Blane's college videos and compare those to others in his draft class. There were actually guys who had nfl qb qualities in his draft class..... I guess what I'm leading up to is this...... Pleeeeeeease ??? PLEEEAse draft a qb who has decent footwork knows how to pump fake and has pocket presence. Please
Quote:Classic case of falling in love with measurables. Gabbert was a golden boy, prototypical size, rocket arm, and a good (although completely manufactured) 40 time. Gene and all the NFL analysts were so in love his measurables they ignored that he was very raw, awful pocket presence, looked stiff on the run, average to below average accuracy, couldn't read defenses well in game (oh but he is a master in the film room) oh and the small fact that he played in a spread happy offense and put up extremely pedestrian numbers.

Gene Smith was a measurables guy, if you ever heard him on the radio he would talk about a guys measurables all day long. Honestly the failure of the entire measurables thing by Smith has me doubtful about the idea of using analytical analysis in football.

I think you mean he's still reaching for jars on the shelf.

I'm sure knowing that he was about to make millions of dollars gave him that little courage he needed.
ESPN analyst Mel Kiper had it wrong too.

Must be a day that ends in y.
Quote:If a player drops. Has to be a reason.

Exactly. That's why Aaron Rodgers sucks so much.

Quote:It's funny.  I was just thinking about this.  I remember my initial reaction to seeing Gabbert footage on youtube for the first time was that he was terrible.  I later saw more video that showcased his potential, and there was all this talk of his high football IQ, and then the combine numbers...  He ended up being my 4th favorite QB that draft.   But if you recall though, he was considered the #1 QB by a majority of the talking heads and tv scouts.  It wasn't just a Gene Smith thing.  In the end, he didn't develop like people thought he would.  There's really nothing else to it.

So many people forget this, and the largely positive draft rankings the team received for the pick.
