Well that's that. Damn it.

So far the teams that have advanced are all in the top 12 for paytoll. The three teams that have lost are in the bottom 12 for payroll. If Detroit wins tonight, that trend will continue.

It's pretty impressive that teams like Tampa, Pittsburgh and Oakland can make the playoffs despite being in the bottom five for payroll. But it sure looks like the don't have what is needed to truly compete for a title.

Baseball has figured out a way to compete in the smaller cities, and no cap. It's very doable.
Great season for my Pirates. The new ownership is starting to show what it wants, and wants to do. Win. Can't wait for next season.

It works if the owners don't use the system to pad their pockets. Houston Astro fans should riot.
I still think that it's really reprehensible that MLB allows players to be traded for cash. And if I'm not mistaken, the cash does not even have to be earmarked for player-related expenses either. That's almost criminal.

Compete for a playoff spot? Compete for a World Series championship? Remains to be seen.

L.A. and Boston spent huge money to upgrade their roster the last year and they both cruised into the second round.

This is why I'm pulling for the Cardinals the rest of the way. They have a knack for filling holes without overpaying, and always seem to find a way to not only stay in the mix, but have a legitimate shot at winning it all.
I will be pulling for the Cardinals as well for the reasons you mentioned

I think it is the influx or international players.  The across the board talent is so plentiful these days that the Yankees can't get all the top players  -- since there is so much talent out there.
As a lifelong Pirates fan, I was just happy to see the Cardinals did not do anything to totally piss me off during the series so I could root for them the rest of the way (assuming the A's don't make it to the World Series).

Exactly. That was the problem with the Pirates for so long, and I've ranted before about it on here! McClatchy was all about making every single dime. Nutting wants to win. McClatchy would fire sell any talent getting good so that he didn't have to pay them. It was ridiculous.

And every pundit coming into the season said those teams would be lucky to to win 70-80 games. The Pirates (after new ownership), have molded themselves after the Rays. Smartest thing they could do.
Who is going to be watching game 5 tonight between Oakland and Detriot? It looks like a really tough pitching matchup for the Athletics. I can't envision Verlander having a bad go of it tonight.

Go Cardinals!!

Thanks for beating the Pirates!!!

Predicted that they would win game 5, so there is that.

Didn't realize there was already a thread on this.

I"m a life long Cardinal fan ever since my father would take me to the Cardinal games when we would visit his parents in St. Louis back in the 60's. Every year, lately that is, I'm wondering at the beginning of the season how they are going to make it after losing key players in the offseason but they have a knack for growing talent in their farm system.

Since the 2011 World Series they lose Albert Pujols, Manager Tony LaRussa, Lance Berkman, Colby Rasmus and others and this year they lose #1 ace Chris Carpenter, Rafael Furcal, #1 closer Jason Motte, Allen Craig, Jaime Garcia to injuries but pull guys from the system and keep on rolling.

Go CARDS!!!
