I've met a few native New Yorkers, none of whom hated New York.
I live in a economically depressed, meth/oxy scourged area, where rusting appliances are considered yard art, home arson is considered creative refinancing, law enforcement corruption is expected, and where a sideways glance at the wrong person can result in a bullet in one's back. Yet I consider it to be God's country.
