What's our plan for the OLine? Whether it's through the draft or through free agency

We needed to replace three interior lineman before yesterday. After yesterday, we have to replace a right tackle. I don't understand why we would put ourselves in a situation to get Bridgewater, and not protect our investment? Franchise Monroe, sign a center (Alex Mack) or something. I agree with building through the draft with every position except O-Linemen. That position, you get it how you can.

I was hoping we'd get an Eric Ebron with the 33rd or Vic Beasley to play the LEO. Now it's more like that we get a RT and still need to get three interior linemen to protect Teddy

All potential though that we draft #1 and draft Teddy

I expect Cadwell to draft our RT. Tackle is loaded for the 2014 draft. I assume, we will sign a decent OG in F/A. I Would like Alex Mack to be signed also.

Tackle doesn't need to be selected at 33. There are good Tackles thorugh rounds 3-5.
Protecting our investment would mean not getting two additional draft picks. David Caldwell has said repeatedly he wants to build this team through the draft and plug holes with free agency. This trade, obviously, is proof he was serious about that.

Eugene Monroe would have to sign a contract extension or a new contract to stay in Jacksonville. Name one player who would want to do that for the worst team in the NFL.

Eben Britton was picked at #39 and look what happened to him. I would not wait until Round 3 to draft the next right tackle when we have nobody at that position who deserves to be a starter.

The kind of player that gets millions of dollars from said new contract. Players in, or about to hit FA, don't care nearly as much about W-L as do about cold hard cash.

Eben Britton was drafted by Gene Smith.

Your argument is invalid.

yeah but the thing is we havent had any luck with big money free agency for awhile, so its hard to be optimistic.

Not the point. JW was claiming players wouldn't want to sign for the worst team in the league, which is wholly untrue.
We needed to replace 60% of the line already, and the team simply opened the door to make that 80%.  Such is the world when rebuilding an NFL roster that's as bad as this one has become.

Monroe represented one of the ONLY players on the roster the team was willing to part ways with who had any trade value.  As more news trickles out about this deal, the value of this deal seems to be diminishing somewhat.  Considering how difficult it is to find a quality LT in the league, we're really going out on a limb putting our trust in a rookie.  Maybe he comes in and plays lights out like Boselli did, or maybe he winds up being another Mike Pearson Or K-Whiff Barnes.  We shall see.

It's a bold move, and a significant gamble by the new GM.  Either he's the smartest guy in the room, and this works out extremely well for the team, or we're going to be treated to more of the same garbage we've been forced to endure for several  years now.  Time will tell.

As far as protecting the rookie QB, that's a legitimate question that has plagued this franchise through multiple QBs.  If Joeckel pans out, I guess we can ask the rookie QB to just hide behind him until we develop a complete line?

I'm betting we'll have a pretty active time in free agency going after guards and tackles when we have the opportunity.

I say draft Bridgewater and use the other 11, 12, 13 draft picks on offensive line.

Lol. We could use the depth
Protect our investment??.....do people forget how good of an OLT prospect that Joeckel is? Arguably the best of a good OLT draft....

Joeckel > Monroe as far as OLT prospects go.

With Bridgewater's pocket presence, just his addition will be like improving all 5 OL with one draft pick. Think Marino.

That's all fine and dandy, but I still want 4 new offensive linemen and some depth behind that.

....no worries. Thats coming regardless.

Not in one offseason
I'm just done with trying to figure out offensive line issues.  We've been dealing with them since the Coughlin era ended.  At our best, we had a good run blocking offensive line that was inept at pass protection.  Go overboard.  Fix this thing once and for all so there will be no more excuses when players fail.  We know they are failing not because of the players or coaches around them, but because they aren't good.

For the most part, offensive line play in the NFL is really, really bad. Even good teams like Green Bay and Pittsburgh have been struggling for years to fix their lines.

Yep....and notice in Denver, they can lose a pro bowl caliber starting OLT and replace him with basically a nobody.....and yet the QB still doesn't get close to being touched.....

People have it all wrong....

Its about getting the QB who makes the OL better, not vice versa.

This is what a QB like Bridgewater will do.

Not saying that I wouldn't replace 4/ 5 of our OL.....just that you will be surprised the difference a QB with outstanding pocket presence will have on the OL as a group.
I wouldn't be surprised at all.  We have a QB who probably has the worst pocket presence of any QB to ever start in the NFL currently.  It's a huge part of my evaluation process when I armchair GM at home.

However, like I said, I want no excuses.
