A couple of years ago, I ran into Josh Scobee at a friends house. We chatted it up about normal stuff 2 typical strangers would do. My friend Tim walked by me and whispered "He doesn't like to talk about the games, because he hears it all the time", so I tried my hardest all night not to talk about football. By the end of the night, I walked over to him and said "I'm sorry I have to ask you just one question...who is the fastest player on the team"? Without hesitation he said Freddy T. Then he openly started talking about the team, so I thought it would be ok to ask him if I could give him a nickname. He smiled, and said "Sure, why not." I put my arm around him and said from here on out, you're going to be called "THE COLT KILLER" He smiled and shook my hand and thanked me for being a fan. He signed my jersey (I happened to have on his jersey) and it is still hanging in my closet today. This all happened just a few days after he kicked that 51 yarder in INDY....I think it was 2008.
He probably doesn't remember me from Adam's house cat, but that is where it all started. So since Tom McManus used to let people call in and give their thoughts on the game, I called in on my way to work that following day and officially put it on the air waves that he is the Colt Killer.
The night he kicked that 59 yarder, the nickname made it all the way to ESPN.
One of my all time favorite Jaguars. Scobee, if you happen to read this, I can tell you where we were at that night, and you will know for sure that is where the nickname came from. By the way, Josh is one of the most coolest players I have ever met. He was a normal guy, and he cracked jokes, and had a great time with all of us that night.
Here's to hoping he knocks another game winner though this Sunday vs the Colts!
