Further back you have the Bryce Paup futility of bringing in a 3/4 pass rushing LB who then gets assigned to pass coverage. Or more recently Alualu who is clearly built to play End for someone like Pittsburgh but ends up over-matched at DT for 3 years. I thought that pick was a sure sign we were going to change the scheme in 2010. You can't just change the scheme when you can't change the players.
The switch to a 3-4 is tougher due to a change in the players that play them. Have to get the right talent in.

 

The difference between blocking schemes offensively is much easier, and these guys have run versions of zone, man, GDL, and numerous protections since they've played the position.

 

The big problem, sadly, right now is Meester. He shouldn't be starting right now.
