I don't understand how they finished last season 2-14?  Its practically the same roster.  Is Alex Smith that good???

No, but apparently Andy Reid is.

We already know that Alex Smith doesn't function well without superior coaching, and apparently Andy Reid is a superior coach.

Related to what you mentioned,    the biggest difference between the 2012 Chiefs and the 2013 Chiefs ( through 3 games ) is the VAST improvement in terms of protecting the ball on Offense and forcing Turnovers on Defense.    In 2012,   the Chiefs were -24 in terms of takeaways vs. turnovers.     Through 3 games this season,   the Chiefs are + 9.

Last season,   Matt Cassel and the Chiefs QB's collectively had a combined 20 Interceptions.    This season,   Alex Smith has 0.      Smith plays cautiously,   which helps keep the Chiefs in games that can be won by the strengths of their team.      This strategy might not be enough against a team like the Denver Broncos,   which light up the scoreboard.    But against teams don't have tremendous firepower,    Alex Smith is a great fit for Andy Reid.
