And people are up in arms that the Jags took the 5th year option on BB for $18 mil?  Sounds like a deal now to me.

While Jaguars fans talked about Blake Bortles getting a fifth season in Jacksonville, the Raiders and Derek Carr's agent were not talking at all. In fact Carr was frustrated there wasn't any communication going on because he does not want contract talks to be a distraction. Most likely some of the people who opposed paying Bortles $18 million for one season don't know it is only guaranteed for injuries. Carr OTOH will receive a signing bonus and other guarantees that have nothing to do with his health, payable over multiple seasons, whenever he signs his second contract.

One of the more interesting factors in Carr's contract negotiations is because Nevada has no state income tax he wants it to be backloaded. He might be paid $25 million on average. I doubt Carr will get paid that much in 2018, when Bortles plays under the fifth year option for $18 million, unless part of it is bonuses.

Bortles being paid 18 million for a handful of wins in 3 years, having mechanics issues and not living up to expectations is why people were up in arms. Derek Carr is on the trajectory to become an elite QB as of right now and has escalated the odds of the Raiders chances of a Lombardi within the near future. Not sure I get the "deal" you're speaking of.

I think he means 25 > 18. The salary difference, if it happens, would be $7 million.

Of course, had we drafted Derek Carr instead, he would only have a handful of wins because of the guys coaching and trying to protect him. He is in a good place.
Just hope that Derek can get it done before training camp!

I don't really care. If he does not get a new contract this summer they will talk again next year. It is crystal clear Carr means it when he tweets "Raider for life."

Completely agree. 18 mil is Mike Glennon money. We all know that if Blake shows out, 18 million will be a bargain.

He wants the contract backloaded? I am not sure that is a good move. Yeah I see the tax benefits, but it makes the team more likely to cut him if he has an unexpected drop off and a huge cap number. A bit risky. But when your talking an extra 9.5% of taxes in California for that top level (I believe that's it currently), I can see why he would do it. He just has to make sure that his money is gaurenteed in those last couple seasons so he disincentivizes the Raiders to cut him.

Now I see what the holdup is on the contract, the Raiders don't want to backload a deal cause that would give him leverage for the next deal also if he performs at the same, or higher level, and penalize their cap later. Thats a real pickle. He might end up with the franchise tag over this for a couple years if hes really wants to wait for Nevada.

Thanks --- you saved me the trouble of having to get out my calculator
I will take a QB worth $25 million who can carry his offense, wins games, and protects the ball any day and 16-20 times on Sunday over a $18 million QB who can barely throw a football right, can't pass for more that 58% completions, leads the league in pick 6s since entering the league, hasn't won more than 5 games in a single season, and has to be relegated to "game manager" to become a viable starter. Even with the dud known as Gus Bradley, we win more than 3 games last year with Carr here, and hell in 2015 we may have had a winning season.. Good QBs make everyone around them better, Blake does not. Carr is the clear cut better QB out of their respective class and it's not even close.

Thank God too, I was running out of toes to count on.
It's done, Highest paid QB in the league...
$70 mil guaranteed.

wow
Remember in 2015 when people were saying "Who would you rather have, Carr or Bortles?" And it was a legitimate question
In a few years Carr's contract will look like peanuts compared to other guys coming up to get paid behind him. With Brady, Brees and Rivers headed out the exit. You'll see Ryan and Rodgers commanding top dollar now like Carr has. Soon you're going to see heavy pushes for this kind of money coming from Cousins' and Stafford's corners too.

Not a knock against Carr or anything. But one great year with it ending in injury doesn't justify this deal. But it needed to be done. The Raiders have suffered long enough. I will be watching to see if Carr can replicate or surpass last year's performance though. He needs to get into the play-offs and a win a game or two now in my eyes.
All that money that used to go to rookie salaries goes to mediocre QBs now. The rookie salaries were a problem that needed fixing, but having all this money go to one position could eventually be another if this keeps ballooning out of control. I'd love to see a team without a QB and a loaded roster dominate for a few years like the Ravens did with Dilfer that one year, but I'm not sure that's possible.
This is a very good reason to draft a QB every other year whether you need one or not.

To possibly strike gold or to avoid paying a contract like this?

Why did my username change?

You sound real sensitive right now and just to let you know a lot of young quarterbacks in the league need other things around them to be successful. If you don't like this team go root for another because we won't miss you as a disgruntled fan.
Carr is almost making J.J. Reddick money!
