Americans Spend More on Taxes Than Food and Clothing Combined

Americans on average spent more on taxes in 2016 than they did on food and clothing combined, according to data released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Yes, but if you're already making $200k+ per year and spending within your means, that number is irrelevant.

What we really need is an end to income tax and a flat consumption tax.

Agreed.
Herman Cain's 999 plan is the answer.
Clearly the problem is that Americans don't spend enough money on food and clothing.

Maybe we should get a tax credit for food and clothing

We do. The system is awful and needs to be scrapped.

I don't see how the two are related.   Besides, as long as we continue to demand government services, and as long as we want a huge military and lots of other stuff from the government, we have to pay for them.    We can't just keep borrowing.   Cutting taxes just makes the deficit worse.   What we need to do is cut spending.   But of course no politician, including Lord Trump, wants to cut spending.   The just want to keep giving away more "free" stuff.   I put "free" in quotes because of course, it's not really free, is it?   They just fool the public into thinking it's free.
I would support a flat 10-15% income tax or a straight consumption tax. There is no reason for the IRS to exist as it does. It is so stupid the way corporations and everything is set up. Audits and all this nonsense. If you have to have audits, your code is too board to enforce.
LOL...

Ya know... the majority of regular America... those who make less than 40k a year...
Don't pay diddly squat in taxes.
Save for Social Security tax and Medicare. (which usually amounts to like 20 bucks a week.)

The income tax is a joke....
tax a person for working is stupid.
tax a person because the government "needs" the money and then giving them all or most of it back because they were under a certain bracket is stupid, why take it in the first place?
taxing a person the minimum and then fully refunding that money PLUS some is even more idiotic....
why would a mother of two, working a waitressing job (not claiming most of her tips on tax forms) be taxed 1k on a year and get a return of 3k......
Where's that other 2k coming from?
Oh yeah.... I was taxed 3k.... and got a return of 700... I see....

The entire tax system is a joke.
But nothing will ever truly change from it....

We need a real revolution..... 1700s style.

Well, you actually have a choice on how much you give to the government through your withholdings. Most people actually think they are getting a genuine "refund" back from the government and don't realize the government has been earning interest off of THEIR money before giving it back.

Typically, if you are receiving a check back from the government at tax time, you are doing it all wrong.

I do agree, the tax system is a joke. The capital gains tax is the worst of all.
We can have tax reform tomorrow. Just refuse to pay it and refuse to work for any employer who withholds your pay. Problem solved. Best of all, we would not lose one shred of government services or benefits, since none of the income tax is used to run the government. 100% of it goes to banksters for "interest on the debt". The debt is what they issue to run the government. They could issue interest-free currency but they don't because they get to pocket the interest.

Doesn't seem like a completely formed plan, does it?

The income tax system is completely voluntary, as the IRS has said many times.  A tax return is a legal confession.  So just don't file.

Ok so how do we get employers to stop taking it out of our checks? Plus if you don't file for a few years you will be audited and the IRS will garnish your wages for anything they feel you should have paid and did not, plus penalties...so it's really not voluntary at all
