It's not what you Think!

The thing that gets lost in the stream of history is how Popular Richard Nixon was.  He won 60% of the popular vote in 1972.  That's slightly more than Reagan in 1984.   Tragedy of Nixon, is that he wasn't self aware enough to understand that he was bigger than the NYT, the Washington Post and at a certain point even bigger than the opposition party.   Instead of realizing that his only measuring stick would be history and his achievements for the American people, he allowed his personal paranoia and character flaws to overtake his presidency.

Trump didn't get 60% of the vote, but he is going to have amassed a considerable electoral college win and probably the biggest total for any republican in the last 7 election cycles.  He will have done this by using a rusty hammer to break several big bricks out of the blue wall.

During the general election Trump had to Realize that that as a candidate for president, his only opponents were Obama and Clinton.  Now his only real opponent is History, his legacy, and his record of achievement.  He can't lower himself below the presidency, and moreover he has to realize that he doesn't have to!  He has to learn to exhibit strength by stepping above things and projecting his own unique style of presidentiality.  He can't get bogged down in what some newspaper guy thinks, he can't pick fights with Megyn Kelly etc.

He redrew a significant portion of the electoral map in pencil last night.  He has an opportunity to darken those lines over the next 4 years and change the course of electoral politics for decades.  He can't be taken away from that aim by the next shiny object that asks an inappropriate question.
