I dont see it. He walks in free agency.  It's him or Ramsey and I'd go with Ramsey. Sign Alex Smith and develop a QB behind Smith. We can't afford Cousins.

Ramsey has 2 more years left on a rookie deal as well as a team option for a fifth year. By the time we need to resign Ramsey the cap will have increased possibly by 40 million by the year 2020, including and rollover and removal of any players who contracts are higher than their pay, Calais may be done by then etc..

We also have a GM that appears to have a eye for talent in the later rounds that can turn into high level starters.

We  have a front office that structures the contracts with 3-4 years in mind with planning as well as protect the team from being hamstrung. This is literally not an issue at all.

Numerous players on the Jacksonville Jaguars' defense could have taken home AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for their thrashing of Ben Roethlisberger over the weekend, but linebacker Telvin Smith's 10-tackle, pick-six performance earned him the award. Smith's third-quarter interception off Roethlisberger, when the game was actually 9-7 in Pittsburgh's favor, flipped momentum and allowed the Jaguars to cruise to a 30-9 win.

You know the defense is special when it is hard for the media to pick only one player for an award. Let's see more momentum-changing pick sixes.

What would we pay him on a long-term deal?
Just north of 10 mil a year for 5. Basically around what lavonte David got or what Kwon will get.

He isn't getting kuechly money and colvin isn't getting bouye+ money.

Smith will get 10-12 mil Max for 5 years. Colvin will get a Max of 8mil a year from us or Max of 12 from anyone else.

So what?  What does that have to do with anything?

Simple math tells you he'll make about 10 million per year if healthy and on the field, but my point was that David plays the same position as Smith while the other compared player's contract is for playing MLB. They get paid more.

It is complicated math with those numbers. When discussing franchise tag vs. long term contract, the annual salary is what matters.
Re: Telvin's projected extension-

Alec Ogletree just signed a 4 year, 42 million extension with the Rams.

I can see Telvin resigning here for around 12.5-13.5 a year. 13 should make him the highest paid if not one of the highest paid WSL in the league. It will only get to 16 million if if gets to free agency. I don’t see that happening.

While they at it, lock up Colvin to about 5 year/19-22mil a year. That would make him the highest paid nickle corner in the league.

I hope we start locking up this defense. I'd hate to see any of them get away.

I can't think of any other defensive players who will be UFAs next year.

I don’t think there are any other than Telvin and Colvin. We’ll have this defense as is at least for another two years before more contracts need to get handed out.

Hopefully longer than that. Of those two I am only concerned about Aaron Colvin.

I'd guess they'd offer him 5 years at around 42-48 million total - with around 25-30 million guaranteed.

That's just speculation from looking at a few of the better WLB salaries.

Welp.

Looks like he's gonna' do better than my guess. ^
Good for Telvin.  12.5 mil per year probably makes him the highest paid 4/3 WLB in the league.  If that's indeed the number.
