I think it's due to the fact that he's a FA next year, can't be tagged, is old, and the Saints have been bad for a while now.

Phillip Rivers has unperformed for the last 3 years turnover wise and record wise so why do you want him or is your decision on him base on perception not reality?
It has been clear by your post history that you are not a Jags fan, you are a Bortles fan. Rivers has had the worst oline in the league and and worst his offense has been killed with injuries the last few years. Rivers is Tom Brady compared to Bortles

Make the excuses all you want but GOOD quarterbacks overcome the teams shortcomings and GOOD Quarterbacks make his teammates better. I been a season ticketholder for 20 years and still go to the games currently and maybe you're a blake hater and want the man to fail even though the team is over .500.

You sign a Brees or Rivers to get one or two more good years from them, and maybe make a run at the Super Bowl with a great running game and a great defense while you draft your guy of the future and develop him.
You sign Cousins or Garoppolo because you believe they ARE the future, and so you shell out the big bucks.
Either approach can work. Just depends on whether you believe there's a guy in the draft who'll outplay Cousins and/or Garoppolo.
Precisely
There are multiple ways to address the qb situation next year. It will get fixed long term

The game planning by the Jags coaching staff tells me exactly how Blake is performing. They do not want him to pass the ball.
If you have a girlfriend who can't cook, you don't tell her she is a crappy cook. You just insist on going out to eat a lot.
Maybe just Maybe that's how the coaching staff wants to play base on their old school values because Maroone played the same way during his time in Buffalo. The titans plays the same way and is that an indictment on Marcus Mariotta who has thrown 452 attempts which was the lowest in the league last year. Whatever this team does i just want to win even if that is replacing Blake with someone else that's not on the roster.

Marrone seems to play to his teams strengths which is clearly not having Blake throw the ball.

Doesn't matter who is available for free agency.
We've seen rookie QBs have success when a team is built around them.
Should we sign a guy like Smith, Cousins, or Brees if they become available? Sure...
But hopefully TC and Caldwell do their homework and bring in the best rookie available (Mayfield, Rudolph...etc)
More than likely we're going to see some lower-tier QB signed (Matt Moore ish) and we'll also draft one (barring some miraculous mid season turnaround for Bortles)

Rivers is better than Blake. That's what it's based on.
Rivers is also much older than Bortles and under contract. Try again.

If the Chargers continue losing this season, they will have an older QB on a rebuilding team. They may trade that older QB for a draft pick considering this QB class has a lot of young talent. Start their rebuild with an extra pick while the Jags get a QB who can help with a great defense and great running game.
Jags also draft a young QB to learn from Rivers and take over in a couple years.
These are all hypothetical so lighten up.

To me the best scenario is sign Brees and draft a qb in the first round.
Second best would be sign Cousins
Third best would be sign Garoppolo
Fourth best would be sign Bradford draft qb in first round
Fifth best would be sign Bridgewater and draft a qb in first round. Open qb competition
Sixth best would be just draft qb in the first and let the play from day one
There are even more scenarios but I think what you do when you sign Brees and Smith is different from what you do if you draft Cousins. The bigger point is that all of these scenarios can work as well as produce short term and long term results.

This hypothetical stuff is all about free agent QBs, right? That would rule out Philip Rivers anyway.

My money would be on A.J. McCarron/Andy Dalton.

Let’s just pray we don’t become the tinhorns. Build that dominant defense and don’t even bother acquiring a quality signal caller.
I’m all for the up and coming guy, but I’m personally on the Brees/first round qb train or the Cousins train. This team is capable of owning the division for a while with a top 12 qb and the defense and run game can be deadly in January.

Skins can throw a transition tag on Cousins which means they can match whatever contract another team gives him.
If the Bengals are truly gonna give the keys to McCarron, I'd take Dalton in a heartbeat.

Great post and I wholeheartedly agree minus the Bradford part. Guy is made of glass. I'd also love to pry Tyrod from Buffalo in the offseason if the Bills falter down the stretch or Rivers from the Chargers before the deadline if they decide to embrace the tank.

Would love to have Brees too. Not to mention next year he will set the all time passing record. Would be nice to see him do it in a Jags sersey

Rudolph will be gone by the time we pick. You don't just take a QB in the first to take one though, value has to be there. I feel we can get Mayfield in the 2nd or maybe even 3rd. Would be good value
