Quote:I'm a proponent for adding a fullback flgatorsandjags, but you're reaching hard here, and today is probably the wrong day to do it.
Not really, this isnt just an issue today if you have watched the Jags the last couple of years. When it is 2nd and 1 and you want to run the football you dont do a shotgun draw play up the middle. This has been going on the last couple of years. Just a couple more times today. You might think thats a good play but when watching other games around the league I never see that call when teams need a yard. It usually involves running behind a FB
Meyers. Gus. The entire O Line. Wasting our FRANCHISE PICK ON BORTLES and missing out on Carr. NOT FIRING GUS. etc
the list goes on. he
is
TRASH
Quote:The shotgun draw should have been ripped out of the playbook when Olson was fired
I dont mind that play but it is not for when you need 1 yard when the box is stacked. The worst time to call a shotgun draw is when you need 1 yard and it happened twice today
The Raiders getting Khalil Mack and Carr while we took what we took will always be hanging over Caldwell's head. He blew it in many more areas but that sequence shows he's not close to being a good gm.

If we took Carr we would of been a bust and there is no doubt in my mind about that

Wheter that's true or not drives home another point about Caldwell is he hired the garbage that's supposed to get the qb better and every other player. Not only that he continues to bring the virus back year after year.
Quote:I think Dave gets input from the coaches on what players they like and then Dave makes the final decision just like every other team. Not to mention you keep bringing up Fisch which was 2 years ago. We havent had a FB the last couple of years either
I keep bringing up Fisch because he was the
initial influence on NOT having a FB in Jax.
He didn't use a FB at Miami. He had a TE that very occasionally did some H-Back work.
When Gus hired him that's when all that talk about an H-Back started getting bandied about around here.
In the end they didn't even really do that here either. They just pulled TEs to run block and tried to let Gerhart lead-block about ten times to little success.
Fisch's offense just didn't use a FB and there was zero reason for Caldwell to have one taking up space on the roster. In fact if he DID acquire a FB for an offensive scheme that didn't use one --- now THAT would be your "career killer."
If anyone was going to
make Fisch (or Olson or Hackett) use a FB it would have been Gus's job to do do that because he's the next step in the hierarchy from the OC.

Lol, whats the difference? Havent been able to run regardless. Today we were able to run the ball but in 2 key situations just showed why it doesnt work when you need short yardage. Then everything you said puts it all on Dave. His vision of this offense obviously doenst evolve a FB. Which is one reason we have be one of if not the worst run teams the last 4 years. Everything you just said is more the reason to blame Dave.

It's not
his vision and it's not
his offense. I'm not sure why you don't understand this. It's the OC's offense. GMs don't hire a coach only to meddle in their scheme. And many head coach's take a similar approach with their coordinators.
Dave hired Gus.
Gus hired the OC.
OC said - "I don't use a FB."
Gus let's Dave know they won't be using a FB.
It's really just that simple. You are convoluting a very simple process to suit some weak blame game.

So you are saying Dave has no clue of what type of offense the OC plans to run before the hire of the OC? You are really reaching on this!
Quote:And they had a good look at Carr in the senior bowl that offseason
Carr would not fit in this offense.
Quote:So you are saying Dave has no clue of what type of offense the OC plans to run before the hire of the OC?
Wow. You make a lot of assumptions. I'm not saying that at all.
These people work together you know. They have meetings about personnel and discuss this stuff. Dave was in discussions with Gus concerning the coordinator and position coach hirings. It was well publicized and Gus and Dave both spoke openly with the media about it, so of course Dave expected there was a good chance Fisch (and Olson) would possibly run without a FB. Of course he knew this was a possibility. They may have even communicated it openly and frankly early in their interviews. You'd be an idiot to assume Dave wasn't well versed in their offensive philosophies.
But the coaches under Gus are ultimately
Gus's hire. Not Dave's. Dave's just a consultant in the matter. Dave's role is to trust the HC he hired to place the right coach's under him.
It just so happens that Gus has hired guys that don't value the FB position like you do. And for some twisted reason you are convinced it's Dave's fault.
Quote:lol
You were apparently unaware that head coaches hire their own staff?
The GM doesn't do that, you know. That would explain why you are so confused on the matter.

Not confused at all. The GM should have a vision of what type of team he would like to build and what type of styles on offense and defense he would like to run. If he didnt like it Gus would of been gone. So im sure they they were both on the same page. Just not a good one. Its really not that hard. You can try to spin it any way you like to make it look like Dave is 0% at fault with what we run.

I'm not trying to spin anything.
I blame Dave for hiring Gus. It's a major strike against him.
And when he hired him he had to press him to disclose his offensive philosophy even though he's a defensively minded coach. Did Gus come out at that moment and say "I don't like to carry a FB on the roster?" Probably not. But I'm sure the run game philosophy was discussed at length. A FB is considered "optional" by many good coaches and Caldwell is certainly aware. Eleven teams don't carry a FB last time I checked. Some of them are pretty good offenses.
So whatever Gus said in those interviews, Dave bought it. But Gus hired the guy ultimately made the decision to pass on a FB. Not Dave.
If you want to backpedal and change your gripe from "no fullback =career killer" to "Dave should have hired a HC with a better offensive philosophy" that would make a hell of a lot more sense.
But this argument that Dave is at fault for not running with a FB is a very strained argument because it's not his
direct decision (and it's also not even considered necessary by a lot of successful running teams.)
Dave's two biggest mistakes:
1) Hiring Gus.
2) Not firing Gus.

Dave can trump any decision and put in input and a direction he would like to see. He obviously liked the direction
