Washington State upset #5 USC in Week 5. Two weeks later, the Cougars came in #8 and left on the wrong side of another upset, losing to Cal 37-3.
In Week 6, #3 Oklahoma lost to unranked Iowa State and unranked Michigan State defeated #7 Michigan for two more college football upsets.
Along in the WSU upset at Cal, Week 7 featured the following:
#2 Clemson 24
Syracuse 27
#10 Auburn 23
LSU 27
Although #17 Michigan won, the sloppiness (school record 16 penalties) and need for OT to beat unranked Indiana made all the talking heads sound like they lost.
This article offers some ideas for how being a Top 10 loser affects each team's future in the conference and playoffs.
