You pretty much have to re-sign Telvin for what he brings to the team and from a team building standpoint. He's been one of the leaders on the team and has been pretty consistent.

From a cap standpoint giving a WILL 10 million + a year isn't a smart move. Signing big contracts to positions that aren't valuable is a good way to ruin the cap but we still might have enough leeway to pull off a front loaded dealing depending if we can get out of the Bortles option or not by the end of the year.
Yesterday Smith was doing the old "show me the money" sign after making a big play. I'm sure he'd welcome a big payday any time.

Telvin Smith continues to prove we don't need bigger LBs.

And who do you think Abry Jones is?

Please dont respond to me, thanks in advance.
4-3 OLBS making big bucks right now...
Ingram, Collins, Hightower, Burfict
All 10 mil per year plus.... Ingram is way high, probably because he's more of a 3-4 rush backer in some weird scheme in San Diego.... Maybe Lottos get paid more?

I digress...
Sean Lee is at about 9 mil....
Smith totally deserves a 10 mil per year type deal....
Maybe 4 years 40 mil front loaded incentive laden

You can't tell me that. I am allowed to respond to anybody I want.

You thanked me for nothing.

Just because we're not hearing about it doesn't mean it's not happening.

How often does it happen? What motivation to teams and players have to do it in the middle of a season knowing they start negotiations anytime before March 9?

The motivation for the player is to sign a big new contract before next week's career-ending injury.

The motivation for the team is to get it done before the player becomes a free agent.

And at the same time not give it to early just in case he does have that bad injury between now and then

Telvin Smith can sign a contract before March 9. You know that if you read the reports about Arrelious Benn and Abry Jones getting contracts in February. He will not be a free agent when the season is over.

No we don't.  We have two perfectly capable NT's already on the roster, and the LBers are built on speed over size and it's paying off in more pressure and more turnovers.

Right - speed is more important than size if you want turnovers.
I agree about extending Telvin.

The Jags "look" like they have a ton of cap space, but Campbell, Jackson, and Bouye have massive contracts already, so extending Telvin Smith and some other potential free agents isn't as easy as it looks, especially if we try to sign an upgrade at QB like Cousins or Jimmy G.

Some current Jags like Poz, Ivory, Lewis, Hurns,  etc. could potentially be cut to clear some extra cap room, and of course cutting Bortles frees up $19 M, but the Jags just have to be careful to not overspend too much on non-premium players.

Take care of the players you want to keep so you know what cap room you have left to work with.

Sign Telvin and ARob. Let Lee walk.

Sign a QB, guard and TE. Draft a QB and guard/tackle.

Sign Colvin too.

And draft a TE.
Right at the end of this video they touch on what is clearly Telvin inferring they need to get the deal done. Malik says in a kinda under the breath, cough covered, sounds like " Need to get that deal soon!!". That video is right around the end of camp I believe.

They do need to get it done. He is becoming more expensive with every game he plays.
At the beginning of the year, the guys I wanted to keep were A-Rob, Telvin and Lee, losing Colvin. Now I'd like to keep Colvin and let Lee walk.
Yeah, let Lee walk for sure. Westbrook will be our guy.
I find it odd Telvin hasn't been extended yet, even if wlb is an "undervalued" position he is still one of the best lbs in the league, the guy makes plays. The front office wants to play wait and see with Smith and Arob but had no problem throwing money at bums like Julius Thomas, Odrick, and Beadles .

Yes, Telvin and ARob should be the top priorities. Both will cost a lot but are worth it. Unfortunately, the team can't really afford to pay Colvin what another team in need of a starting cornerback will offer him. Lee will be the toughest decision. He drops too many passes and is injury prone, but he has elite skills after catching the ball. I hope they can lock him up for a reasonable price, but have a feeling he will be gone if Westbrook plays well after returning.

The toughest decision(and most important, by far) is who to go after at quarterback. They should be able to afford the hefty price Cousins, Smith and Jimmy G. will command, but are any of them worth it? If Baker Mayfield or Mason Rudolph are available when they pick midway through round 1, would they be better options considering the cost and age advantage? If I were calling the shots, I'd take the best available quarterback in round 1. Mayfield and Rudolph are both much more accurate than Blake and seem to be solid leaders. Coughlin and his staff can decide who would be the best fit and they may even prefer another guy like Jackson. They just need to get it right. In free agency, they can sign a veteran q.b. who will not cost a fortune to be the back-up. Coughlin can then use his pull to sign Pugh from the Giants to solidify the offensive line. They can get a good tight end in the 2nd round next year as it is another strong class- especially the kids from Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Penn State.

Overall, I agree with your priorities and hope our decision-makers see it the same way.
