There is an area called Sin City near Atlantic and Southside. Don't let the name fool you. It is a really nice area with unlimited rim and tire rental shops.

J/K. As a 37 year resident of Jacksonville, if I were to move anywhere, personally, it would be around the Baymeadows/Southside area. Just my opinion.
Not sure what your budget is or if you are looking for a house or an apartment, but if you are looking for a house that is poorly built with builder grade finishes and marked up 50% that you will never get your purchase price back out of, I would recommend Nocatee.
He’s a single guy...nocatee is starter family hell.
They are building all these new apartments in the beaches area (Atlantic, Neptune, Jacksonville Beach) and if you want to be close to the water and the beach scene, I think that would work for you.

Another area that has loft style places for rent is the St Johns Towncenter, which has a big shopping/dining scene, and close to the local university so there are lots of young people. It's about a 20 minute drive to the beach. Lots of traffic, but as a single-guy, you don't have to hurry home haha

OMG .... too funny !!   Not to mention that in Nocatee you are ever so close to the Mickler parking lot that has a 150 car capacity but usually gets ~ 1,000 cars in the summer.

I'm a beaches person but agree that Tinseltown / St Johns Town Center is a great place for a 30 something single person.  Gate Parkway area is the #1 desired location for businesses looking to move into Jax; at least that is what the top commercial broker indicated to our company .... also currently working in that area.
..... Also if you like living on the edge of death every minute and being in the slowest vehicle no matter how fast you drive, you may want to get an apartment on the Westside off any exit of I-10
I think if I was 30-ish years old and single, I would be looking in the 5-Points area, which is in Riverside. 5-Points has a lot of restaurants and bars. And it's pretty close to town, so wherever you are working, it's probably not too far from 5-Points. It's a very diverse area, with very diverse people.
Riverside - Beaches just like everyone said. Where in upstate are you coming from?
There's a beautiful golf course in Brentwood that you can get views of fairly cheap. Also, Cleveland Arms may have just what you're looking for.
I'm not real familiar with Riverside but here are a bunch of good reviews of both, Jacksonville Beach and also the Riverside/Avondale areas.

The balcony rooms at the Gator Lodge have a nice view of the Walmart parking lot.

That’s an awesome Walmart! What other store can you play “hooker or not”? Laughing

When we were in Florida for our honeymoon, I tasked my wife with booking the hotel in Jacksonville the night before the game we attended. The only stipulations I laid out were that it needed to be relatively close to the lot we went tailgating in.. anyway, we didn't stay in the Gator Lodge... but it was very close to it.. since then, she's not been allowed to book any 'hotels'.

I hope not.. there were kids in the parking lot playing basketball.. we stuck out like a sore thumb, we looked very much like British tourists..

We barricaded the door closed and hoped nobody knocked.. It didn't look too dissimilar to the motel that Jesse meets the 'working girl' in Breaking Bad..

The hooker’s kids have to keep busy while momma is working somehow!

Very good point.. those poor children.. They all shared a tooth (no, they weren't British).

As a general rule, tell her to avoid the places that offer an hourly rate!
