I half expected this move when I noticed his cap hit in their books. I'm thinking he's a darn good TE but was just too expensive for them to keep.

The $ 8.25 million 5th year Tender option did indeed prove too extensive for Lions GM Bob Quinn.  Especially, when factoring in the Lions having a new Head Coach,  new TE Coach,  new Offensive Line Coach,  expected changes to Offensive Coordinator Jim Bob Cooter's system,  and related,  Eric Ebron is a below average in-line run blocker.   A piece of the puzzle like Ebron is something the Patriots haven't had much in the Bill Belichick era. Aaron Hernandez was an exception. Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia clearly still have a Patriots mindset.   Power running likely will be a much greater component of the Lions Offense,  which doesn't fit Ebron's skill set.
Wouldn't mind if the Jags took a low cost flyer on him. But I am not so sure he would do that.
