Every player in that draft had his best year as a rookie except McCray in 2014. Every player declined after that.

How much of that was bad drafting, vs. the Gus culture ruining the players?

Those are very good questions. It could completely be a Gus thang.

You don't take Reggie Williams over Rothlisburger. You don't draft Gabbert over JJ Watt. Or Anger over Wilson, and the list goes on.

There are times where need does play a key factor. But good teams have the luxary of picking the very best player available. The bad teams 'seem' to draft for need.

Aaron Rodgers wasn't needed in 2005 up in Green Bay...but man that pick sure paid off.

Wow, you're the same guy who started the "Taven Bryan - are they kidding?" thread right?

I'll give you the Reggie Williams example, classic case of the perils of drafting need over value. But Gabbert and JJ Watt? Gabbert was ranked higher on draft boards everywhere that year, and the Texans fans and pundits were mad salty that they drafted a DE when they already had Mario Williams and Antonio Smith. They hated it. If anything that is an example of why knee jerk reactions to a pick are so dumb (like are you kidding?). If we had drafted Watt there people would have been up in arms about the lack of value.
The team has to build towards the future like the Steelers and Patriots have done. Yes having that franchise QB is a big part but the QB needs talent around him to win the big game.
You can define the strategy/philosophy however you like - but all I know is - the Cough-well combo is working.
