U.S. job growth picks up, unemployment rate falls to 3.9 percent

U.S. job growth increased less than expected in April and the unemployment rate dropped to near a 17-1/2-year low of 3.9 percent as some out-of-work Americans left the labor force.

The U3 unemployment rate is the monthly headline number. The U6 unemployment rate is the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) broadest unemployment measure, including short-term discouraged and other marginally-attached workers as well as those forced to work part-time because they cannot find full-time employment. The actual unemployment number is derived by adding back the "long-term discouraged workers" which were eliminated from all government unemployment reporting in 1994.

So U3 is currently 3.9%
U6 is around 8%.
The true number is about 22%
