He thinks the United States, the country that invented (or made better) most of the modern things in guns - a country whose entire history is written with the use of guns - could simply turn in their guns and everyone would be happy.
Australia has a population that's less than 10% of the United States... and their history is pretty much garbage in comparison. Our short, proud history was written by the gun. Forged by the gun. Normal people with guns took this country, expanded this country, created this country. Yes, they committed genocide on their way to doing it, but that's a whole other conversation... and in that short time it became the most powerful country this planet has ever seen. That's not hubris. That's just military fact.
No one would turn in their guns. Anyone sent to collect them wouldn't dare to, either because they themselves own guns or just believe in the Constitution of the United States of America which protects our rights (right. Not privilege. Not entitlement. RIGHT) to own guns.
You just can't understand.
EDIT: And I realize you're English and they were the world power forever... but your country was created back when swords and shields were how you took the UK.. by the time guns came around your military was busy subjugating people who only had swords and shields (late 1800s early 1900s specifically) around the world.. your country never cared about guns the way Americans do.

Not sure anyone mocked Australia’s military history. But if we’re being honest, they’ve never really been very stought without either British or American support.
