I would guess the irony is a guy sitting on a flag (towel or otherwise) wearing a shirt that says, "I stand for the national anthem."

Everyone comprehends it Mr. Enlightened. The problem is that no one understands its relevance. Was it at a gathering where everyone was sitting on a flag towel wearing that shirt? Is it indicative of a large group of people doing the same?
