A few items I want to get out of the way off the bat...

1.  I absolutely loathe all of the fans being restricted to the south 20 yard line in.

2.  Calais Campbell and Eli Ankou are not practicing tonight.

How is it going?  I was planning to attend but something came up. Smile

Interested in how the WR's are doing.
Upset there's no stream.

CC has a calf injury

Apparently Cooke looks awesome though
I’m on my way to the goat store to start making the appropriate sacrifices in the name of Calais’ calf.
15,000 plus folks turned out.
Okay..here are my thoughts from the scrimmage tonight.

1.  Earlier I mentioned not liking being forced to sit from the 20 yard line in.  There was something else I didn't care for, either, namely the complete lack of information provided by the stadium scoreboard operator and PA announcers.  In years past, the scoreboard would post the scrimmage rules/scoring, down and distance, etc.  The PA announcers would discuss the players involved in the play, etc.  None of that was present during the scrimmage.  They didn't even announce whether the first, second or third teams were in.  If that is the cost of having a winning team, I'll gladly pay it, but somehow I don't think being informative during a scrimmage and fielding a winning team are mutually exclusive.

2.  Our CBs may occasionally give up receptions, but there is rarely, if ever much separation between them and receivers.  Both Ramsey and Bouye gave up catches tonight, but usually they were next to impossible throws and catches involved, which often left me to wonder how the completion was made.

3.  With Calais Campbell being out (they showed him on the jumbotron and he appeared fine, Taven Bryan played the strong DR Campbell usually plays, and like Campbell, Bryan was moved all over the line, getting snaps at LDE, DT, NT, and RDE.  He didn't seem to make much impact.

4.  While we are on the defense, Leon Jacobs flashed a couple of big plays.  The first play was during a drill where the offense started in horrible field position (at their own 3) and had to get out of there.  Jacobs came in on a blitz that dropped Fournette for a one yard loss.  Later, Jacobs blitzed and got big pressure on Bortles.  He showed a good first step/acceleration on those plays.

5.  Hayden captured my attention on a couple of plays.  He had a nice pass defense on one play, and cam in from his nickel position on a blitz.  I don't think Bortles recognized him as a blitzer because NOBODY touched him.  He would have gotten a big hit on a sack on that play.

6.  Even though there were a lot of completions to the flat (enough to make me think that this scheme is willing surrender dumpoffs to the flat), Telvin Smith would have killed Yeldon on a dumpoff to the right flat.  As it was he got a good hit on him, but had they been going full contact, Yeldon might have come out of the game.

7.  There were not a lot of INTs, but Church registered the one INT on an attempted deep pass from Bortles down the left middle into double coverage between Bouye and Church.

8.  I was mortified when I saw Logan Cooke punt for the first time.  I saw wobbler after wobbler, and I was concerned he might actually be cut.  Tonight, he was much better.  His first punt was a booming kick
that spiraled, turned over, and was downed inside the 5, the first of two kicks downed at that part of the field.  I feel better about his punting after tonight.

9.  The running game was pretty much a non entity tonight.  There were occasional good runs by Yeldon, Grant and Brandon Wilds, but there were plenty of plays for minimal to no gain.  I suppose I should be happy, given the strength of our DL, but the part of me that likes the ground game wanted to see a little more.

10.    Tanner Lee's roster spot is anything but a given, but he helped himself tonight with a decent performance.  He also helped Jaydon Mickens quite a bit, as the two connected on several intermediate length completions, one for a TD.  Mickens later had what would have been a punt return for a TD, featuring a part where he tightroped down the left sideline and cut back inside.

11.  D.J. Chark made his presence known tonight with a few catches along the sideline and on a short crossing route.  but he had the highlight catch of the scrimmage, with a diving catch of an intermediate to deep pass down the left middle of the field.

12.  It looked like Westbrook was going to be credited with a big play, making a catch over the middle then getting up untouched and running for another 20-30 yards.  But he was ruled to have trapped the ball.

13.  I noticed Adams for the first time on a run to the left.  He showed good pulling ability.  I didn't notice Richardson too much, but I will say this.  The second and 3rd team OLs seemed to give up a lot of pressure from the right side of the OL throughout the night.

14.  I only saw ASJ make one catch, but Niles Paul was in on several catches.

That is it for now...and if you have any questions, hit me with them.  I'll see what I can do to answer them.
Corey Grant showed some flashes, found daylight several times. I think we should see more rotations with him during the regular season. Westbrook had a nice touchdown catch to end the practice, falling backwards at a weird angle to make a great catch. Mickens looked nice on several plays, and a nice punt return. Out of the receivers that would be on the chopping block, I would like him to survive the cuts. Didn't see much out of ASJ, nor any other right end. Bortles had some nice scrambles, one for a TD.

You know, from seeing the Twitter videos the past few days, and all the TD catches make against our defenders, you might have gotten the impression that our secondary was having issues. None of that was apparent tonight. I didn't see very many receivers open at all, when playing against the first string secondary. I don't recall any deep throws being caught.
After practice tonight I think Mickens has the inside edge on the final WR spot. He flashed both on the offense and special teams. He seems to be reliable which is only a plus.

I think Chark may work his way up the depth chart sooner than later. He flashed some as well tonight according to my “eagle eye” observations.

Corey Grant better get more opportunities than last year. He needs to see at least 10-12 touches in a game either running or passing. I don’t know how you work that out with Yeldon but it has to be done. He’s lightening In a bag, capable of busting one loose at any given moment.

I believe our defense is ready to pick up where they left off last year. There were several plays I noticed that would have resulted in a big hit or break up had they been able to go all out. Jacobs in particular is looking like a beast early in camp and at the scrimmage.

Re: no. 2, I agree. That final pass to Westbrook with Bouye in tow was impressive. Something you don’t expect to see from Bortles. Definitely left a smile on my face.

Bortles DID throw that TD against Bouye but in no way could I say Bouye had bad coverage.  To the contrary, Bouye had him blanketed.

Westbrook’s catch on the last play of the scrimmage was phenomenal. Hope to see many plays like that out of him this season.
I really hope Lazard stays on the Jags. If he goes to the PS, I have a fear that someone is going to scoop him. I’m not saying he will be the 6th WR but I don’t wanna see him blow up on another team.
Thanks a lot for the report!
One guy from BigCatCountry seems to think Chark should start.

Yea, someone will pick him up if he goes to the practice squad. I also like Mickens due to his punt returning. Maybe they could keep Lazard as a swing player (wide receiver and receiving tight end/red zone weapon) and start the year with Mickens to see if he can be the weapon he was when he started returning punts last season. If not, they could always let him go and pick up someone at another position lacking depth like linebacker. Greene has looked good, but is just another guy and someone will likely pick him up if cut by the Jags.

I think they treat Chark like they did Westbrook and Cole last year. Calculated play off the bench until someone gets banged up.
Are there any video clips at all?

Found this:

The Dede catch over Bouye ends the video
Yea eventually someone will get hurt to some degree. Our WR injuries always seem to snowball to where we had to bring in guys like Jalen Strong last year to play in games. I don't see a reason to rush a rookie receiver out there early on unless we're ahead by 3 TD's in the 4th quarter.

What if rookie earned it? Would that be a reason?
I cant wait to see a 5 WR set. Cole, Westbrook, Lee, Chark, and Moncrief.

Cant cover them all

The isn't any doubt that there will be a missmatch
