1. I really liked what I saw from the first team offense and defense. Granted, i was holding my breath everytime someone came within 10 feet of Bortles or whenever Fournette ran the ball, because I wouldn't have even played them. If either goes down due to injury, we're screwed.
2. Dede Westbrook looks much crisper and more certain of himself this season. I look for him to make big steps forward this year.
3. Leon Jacobs looks like a late round steal! He fits right in with Telvin and Myles. If he continues playing like he did tonight, we'll have far and away the best 4-3 LB trio in the NFL. He looks like he can do it all.
4. Just based off what I saw tonight, I'd give the edge on the Nickleback competition to Patmon. He just looked more consistent.
5. We have some really good WR's. I like the depth we have at the position. I gotta say, I'm not wild about short receivers, but Shane Wynn impressed me a ton. I like this kid.
6. Cody Kessler is miles better than Chad Henne. I finally have confidence that we have a backup QB who can give us a chance to win games, if something happens to Bortles. He went through his reads, sensed the blitz and looked very comfortable in the pocket.
7. Andrew Motuapuaka impressed me quite a bit. I'm going to be rooting for this kid to make the team. By the way he played tonight, he looked like primary backup type of material.
8. Tanner Lee is God awful! I said it when we drafted him and I'm saying it again. He wan't make the PS.
9. Beyond the final score, (which means nothing,) I loved what I saw out there. I'm more impressed by this team than any other we've ever had.
The offense looks like they have alot ofweapons. Blake seems confident and more in control this year.
27 is gonna have a great year.
Defense was missing a few guys, but looked ok for their one series. Jack looks real good. Can really run for a MLB
Kessler goes a nice, quick ball, and he's mobile. Think we have our backup
Did Taven play? How did Harrison look? I was upset because I was expecting to be able to watch the game online but apparently they are only streaming it for north Florida, the U.K. and like Mexico. Tanner Lee was a waste of a 7th round pick. It’s all over the internet so I took it with a grain of salt but I even had multiple friends randomly text me and say how terrible he was. It’s like we accidentally drafted the wrong backup. That being said, I think Keesler is better than people think. Impossible situation with the Browns but I always thought he was decent. Glad we have him as a solid backup
Agreed on Leon Jacobs. Looks like a stud.
My thought immediately is kickoff is going to be different this season with the rule changes. I don't know if Lambo has the leg to hit it out the endzone everytime, but if he can Marrone should consider it. Kick coverage starting full sprint as opposed to stand still is a huge difference and allows the return squad to set up. I think that's what led to some big returns from NO.
Jacobs is going to be fun to watch. You can see why he is a starter. Chark is so big tho! It took like 6 guys and they still didn’t tackle him. He ha very light feet for a big man.
Fournette looks so good out there. Bortles looked good.
Which brings me to the guy I want to take a hold of this WR group... Westbrook looks like he’s ready to be that guy. He looks confident. He’s gonna catch a lot more balls this season.
The defense was in preseason mode.
Lee is a horrible QB but our backup LT is even worse.
Lambo was perfect on the evening.
Grant had like 5 yards on 8 carries or vice versa. But he was slippery out of the backfield receiving and man can he get to 100 mph quick. He has another gear.
Typical preseason game

Wells is actually our backup LT but they had him starting at RT. I'm not sure if he moved over to LT when the 2nd string came in, but I'm fairly certain the LT you're referring to is the guy after him... the absolutely massive rookie Brandon Smith. Smith is stiff at nails with no business playing LT, but the guy is 6-8, 344 lbs.
EDIT: This may be yet another case where the Jaguars are fibbing a little bit on their roster size info. Just a few months ago at the combine, ECU's Brandon Smith weighed in at 6' 6 3/8", 316 lbs. Also, I noticed he ran a 5.5 40-yard dash and had an 8.3 3-cone drill.

Grant is the most underappreciated guy on the team. He is a pure weapon. He's deadly when catching screen passes. He's one of those role players that I hope has a long career and retires a Jaguar.

Not too long ago there was this guy names Sproles. Now there's a new guy doing the same stuff. His name is Corey Grant.
The Jags will only go as far as Bortles takes them. He looked good, most of the time. That one throw could have and probably should have been intercepted, so he still is working some bugs out. Our perfectly imperfect QB. I still just don't know.

I want Grant to be our RB2. He can kill you with his speed.

Thanks, I do what I can.... hahah
I didn't see much that was noteworthy. A few of the people I wanted to watch didn't play.
1. Norwell and Parnell didn't play, and yet the starting OL didn't appear to miss a beat. Fournette was getting openings and running very well. Bortles had plenty of time.
2. Cole didn't play. Westbrook looked like the best WR out there last night. Moncrief and Lee did nothing good or bad (Lee had a nice block on one play). Wynn was sharp.
3. Mickens wasn't targeted at WR. He had a fair catch on his only punt return, and the best kickoff return of the day for the Jags which was a new role for him. If the competition was based on just this game he would beat out Greene for the last WR slot. Greene showed nothing receiving and dropped a punt return.
4. Lee and LT Brandon Smith were so bad at the end that nothing much could be discerned about the rest of the 3rd/4th string offense.
5. I was disappointed that the starting defense couldn't stop a Savage-led Saints offense. We started a 4th string strong end, but that one position should not have made much difference.
Nice comments on the first pre-season game.
1. I want to see TE Scott Orndoff work with the first team next week. It's uncanny. In him, I think we have a long-term player solution, who has a REAL chance to become a well-respected pro. I mean even a household name, if you know what I mean.
I have been examining his Combine/draft numbers. He was electronically timed 4.79 in his 40-yard dash.
He is swift-footed. Runs balanced. Tracks the football extremely above average. Has the best pair of hands on a tight end I have seen since Pete Mitchell.
From NFL Draft Scout:
2016
Enjoyed one of the most productive seasons ever by a Pitt tight end, compiling 35 catches for 579 yards (16.5 avg.) and five touchdowns...finished second on the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns (tied)...was highly instrumental in the Panthers' 43-42 upset at eventual national champion Clemson with nine catches for 128 yards (14.2 avg.) and two TDs—all career highs...helped Pitt rally past Georgia Tech with a 74-yard scoring reception that tied the game, 34-34, with 3:50 left...Orndoff's TD set the stage for the Panthers' game-winning field goal as time expired...selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game...named to the All-ACC Academic Football Team for the third time.
2. Kessler did a better job of performing than Bortles did. Blake makes throws that twist his receivers in the opposite direction of where they should be heading. Can he throw a well-timed flats pass...ever? The ball is late and the receiver has already taken up the gap between himself and the defender. How many times do we see Blake throw a flats pass that the route-runner has to stall, spin all the way around in order to make the catch? A lot. Low and outside pitches. This NOT a problem beyond remedy. It needs fixing now. Otherwise, Bortles defied throwing easy interceptions....twice. He was NOT making a quality effort at following typical pass play progressions like Kessler was. The long-standing knock on Blake is he excels in circumstances where he knows his primary target. Beyond that nothing. That's a single-option quarterback who lacks a complete grasp on how to command the field of play. At this stage for Bortles, it's likely a lack of peripheral vision rather than slow information processing. It's a wonder why Blake hasn't memorized the play book well enough to know he doesn't have to lock on to the primary receiver. On any given pass play there is a route capable of long gain and/or scoring. Always. It just so happens that it isn't always the first priority receiver's route. At any rate, it is WAY too early in the new year for Bortles to be acting so greedy.
3. Tanner Lee is a awful front office mistake. Dump him immediately and pick up former Memphis QB Riley Ferguson, who happens to be available. You don't really believe Anthony Miller single-handedly was responsible for his own success, do you?
4. Josh Allen? Dang it. Pay attention to the last throw.

I haven't seen this level of antipathy towards a late round Jags draft pick ever. I don't know of anyone who even comes close to actually liking Lee.
It seems as though he is the one player on the team capable of inducing stadium wide projectile vomited with his play.

How in the hell does a 7th round draft pick walk into preseason training camp, and get immediately inserted as a starter on this defense? That boggles my mind.
Our starting defense is like a pro bowl roster. And here is this rookie 7th round pick that walks straight into a starting spot and looks like he belongs.
What. The. Hell.
How does that happen?

Good to see ya Marty!
To answer your question, we have an outstanding GM in Caldwell.

But wait! Caldwell selected Lee!
Just kidding. Some of the people here are in post-season form. Ready to cast off
a seventh round pick after one quarter of play. A guy who was projected to be a project. You think he was a little nervous? It's not like he's going to play this year. But off with his head!
But Jacobs is a heck of a story.

I totally agree with your comment. Dave Caldwell has gone from being on the hot-seat to being considered one of the top g.m.'s in the league. Let's look at what he has done with the defense:
1. Drafted Ramsay in the 1st: O.K., that was a no-brainer, however he accepted the gift from the Cowboys graciously! All-pro on the way to Canton if he keeps it up.
2. Moved up a spot to make sure he got Myles Jack in the 2nd round of the same draft. Future pro-bowler (probably this year).
3. Loved what he saw from Yannick at the Senior Bowl and stole him in the 3rd round. Future pro-bowler (probably this year).
4. Drafts Telvin Smith in the 5th round. Not sure he deserves a lot of credit for waiting this long, but he beat the other 31 general managers who hesitated due to his small stature
and reported positive drug (marijuana) test. Pro-bowler and greatest value draft pick in team history!
5. Drafting the aforementioned Leon Jacobs in the 7th round.
6. Brought in Calais, Bouye, Church, Gipson and Dareus as free agents. All 5 of these guys have been success stories with Calais and Bouye becoming the 2 best free agents the team has
ever signed with the possible exception of Keenan.
Nobody is perfect and his selection of Fowler could be questioned when Leonard Williams was on the board, but that is nitpicking since Dante has improved and is capable of having double digit sacks this season- especially since he is playing for a potentially huge new contract.
For a guy who has made so many great moves, I still scratch my head when I think about the extension he gave Gus Bradley. However, he has earned a pardon for that incomprehensible move due to the player acquisitions mentioned above.
