ESPN article about Gronkowski being and old-school TE. Pictured is Gronk and Church, which is used to infer the TE's blocking ability. Isn't this pic of the hit by Church that knocked Gronkowski out of the AFCCG? BTW, this hit, which Church was penalized for, looks like he led with his shoulder.
Yup, mama said knock you out, LL Cool J
Church put it to the gronk....."Old School" style.

Poor choice of picture.
It was a legal hit IMO too. He definitely led with his shoulder
I'm not clear on the rule. He clealry led with his shoulder, but their helmets also collided immediately after.
It was clear helmet to helmet. Doesn't matter what he led with or what his intent was. Easy penalty.

I've always been under the impression that if the shoulder hits first then it's not a penalty. The helmet to helmet is incidental at that point.
Maybe I'm wrong. I probably am. But that's how I think it should be.
It was incidental, so it was legal.
Has to be the top or crown to be illegal.

You are incorrect. That was a judgement call all the way. The first contact was with the shoulder. I can see why it was called but it certainly could've gone either way.
So, maybe a silly question here but how was there not going to be helmet to helmet contact in this situation? Your shoulder is pretty close to your head anatomically speaking and morose when the neck is at an angle. So how do you prevent this?

More importantly "why" should we prevent this? It's part of the game.
We're talking the Patriots in a conference championship game. Do we really need to discuss integrity of the calls?

As I understand the rule (it may have changed) helmet to helmet contact is only a penalty when the helmet is the primary source or initial point of contact. Refs have the discretion to determine if the helmet to helmet contact was the result of incidental contact or not.
To be clear, ANY contact with the helmet of the QB is a penalty. This ban is not limited to helmets.
