I don't understand your first sentence.  Are you saying there's "no real difference" between the #2 defense in the league and the #22 defense in the league?

In the potential ability to build a supporting cast around either...in the hypothetical world that the dude made up that I was originally playing along with.

Definitely two different "worlds" in this conversation, LOL. I'm talking about just giving up one contract and player for the other  --  in the otherwise current reality.
