One of the common issues on D calls from the middle (ie Jack) are either wrong or late.
Last year our D was much better when Poz was making the calls or on the sideline.
They need to bring Poz back to help make calls and coach if he would do it. We are lacking football smarts/experience at the LBer position.
It also appears that T Smith is not always in the right spot or missing assignments.
Poz was one of the leaders last year and is missed this year.
I think Poz brought a veteran presence to the LBs that is missing right now. I know a lot of folks wanted him gone but the guy was the glue, and was still productive. How much longer would that have lasted? No idea.
I think we're missing Marcedes offensively more than we're missing Poz defensively. We sure could use that reliable '3rd OT' in protection right now.
Having Lewis would help with blocking for sure
There's a lot of uncertainty in the air. And sure it wouldn't hurt to have Paul back but ultimately the defense was playing great football until this offense started falling apart physically leading up to the Kansas City game and now from yesterday's game.
When that offense can't move the football or hold up well in protection we all know that defense is standing on the sideline thinking "....... DAMN IT! Here we go again!". And then they spend all day on the field and get too damn tired to care or keep up.
This falls back on Marrone, Hackett and Wash. Injuries happen. You're going to lose key players here and there all across the board. It's up to the coaching staff to instill confidence in their pieces out there and if something isn't working they need to address it and make the needed adjustments to survive long enough until they get somewhat healthy at the positions they need to be healthy at.
Paul being absent shouldn't create this much hysteria or that much of a drop off. This defense wasn't perfect last year. They had lapses in San Francisco, Arizona, at home against the tacks earlier on last year and they damn near let the Steelers come back and ice all of that positive work they put in during that first half in a play-off game.
So it's not bothering me at all. They come back home. They need us to be there loud and proud for them. If they can find a way to go 5 - 3 or even 4 - 4 going into the bye week we'll STILL be in good shape in a poor AFC South. Our division isn't that tough at all. It's inconsistent as hell. We just need Fournette to get healthy and they need to shore up that offensive line somehow and we'll be back in the saddle.
We STILL control our destiny here folks. Don't [BLEEP] your pants just yet. It'll be okay. I promise.
Marone said comunication was the main reason the defense played bad. conunication from the coaches to the players and the players to the players. so there might be somthing to that missing poz
Marrone talked quite a bit about communication issues during today press conference.
Mentioned it being a problem not only on defense but also on offense and special teams.
He also mentioned that it might not be all on what happened on the field on Sunday but also during week of preparation with the amount of stuff and info they are giving to the players (that's your key, that's your read, but if they do this then do that, if they do another thing than do another thing) that might be slowing them down a little, they are looking into this.
Mentioned guys wanting to do a bit more at times and going out of position because of that. He also said this about the offense where a couple of times a player has been trying to give more help to a certain player while help was needed the other way (OL protection I think).
While I think Poz's presence can be missed a bit I don't think that's the issue, there were communication issues that led to coverage breakdowns last season too, I think it's a wider problem that goes back to the way they are preparing and teams exploiting more the weaknesses that have been exposed at times.
Oh and about the TD play where we rushed only Yannick and Fowler with the 2 DTs going back in coverage he said it was a mistake by one of the tackles.
To me it looked like he dismissed a bit the question about a lot of zone coverage since he said they have been playing the same amount of zone and man..
Poz wasn't on the field last year except in 4-3 situations, which wasn't a lot.
If they miss him, it wasn't because his on the field play. Bring him back on the sideline, but it probably doesn't matter.
The LBs are getting burned in zone and have been too slow in man.

I think you're mainly right, especially about the overreacting everyone's doing.
But this defense has not been up to snuff this year. Teams move the ball on us too much, especially running between the tackles. And Jalen Ramsey's alligator mouth has overloaded his jaybird butt. Actually do your job consistently instead of puffing out your chest and yammering on and on.
Eh, Poz was a good player but this whole communication stuff needs to be taught and communicated from the teacher(coach) to the student(player). You should never need another student to do the teachers job. Wash just isn't developing squat. Pro bowl talent at every position... but if the pro bowl was today who's going?
I can't accept the argument that the entire defense is basically dumb and they need Poz to save them. They aren't, it's Wash not teaching anything.
As one of Poz's biggest fans, I don't think we're missing him all that much. There have definitely been moments where he may have sorted something out pre-snap that was wrong - or he'd have read a run play better than Jack - but I don't feel like there's been some big drop off at the mike position.

But communication involves several parties on defense.
As Marrone indicated, there were breakdowns on all three levels of the defense.
I don't know how much of that, if any, you can attribute that to Poz not being here.

Weren't they still #1 going into yesterday's game?
They are currently 9th in scoring defense.
I don't believe they have played up to their potential yet, but I don't think they have failed to meet "snuff" level overall.
They certainly haven't been at that level the past two weeks.
His impact was not only on the field, but preparation during the week and breaking down plays. People can shrug it off, but it still plays a part. Telvin Smith has not looked as good this year. That's just my opinion and what my eyes tell me.

It's certainly possible they are missing what Poz brought to the locker room and position group meeting rooms.
I wouldn't argue that particular point. I just feel they haven't missed him very often on the field. Some - but not often. If Mahomes and Kelce were able to beat Jack in coverage, what would they have done to Poz?
And yes, Telvin has had some ugly moments in three games (by my count) that are not what we've come to expect from him. He's also made some incredible plays as well.
I believe we have a QB problem.......a defensive QB problem. The middle linebacker is the defensive QB. After watching Dallas receivers running wide open, especially out of the backfield, that’s the only conclusion I can draw. Yes, I miss Poz.
No Poz is not what we are missing. Bar the cowboys game the defense has been pretty good and lined up correctly. Jack has actually outplayed Telvin this year.
The issues lies with Wash and wash alone. I think we are at the point where he's gonna really need to show he can adapt the defense mid game , I'm not so sure we have too many examples of him successfully doing that.

Not getting rid of Wash has proven to be the biggest mistake this team has made in the past 2 years. If we had Baltimore's defensive coordinator we'd be first in all categories on defense.

I don't think you can reasonably argue that having Wash as DC last year was a "mistake". Bar a handful of games he wasn't bad at all (yes we are Uber talented but you can only judge based on what we saw).
The defense hasn't been as good this year and that is mostly on Wash imo. I'm willing to give him a chance and see what he does after the cowboys smack down because we haven't really had a big reason to change everything prior to this game.
If he doesn't adapt this time then I'd be pretty confident in saying he never will.
If PoZ being gone is what made this D seemingly fall apart in a couple games......
we got big problems lol
I don't think Poz matters as much as a lot of other smaller things adding up...
from coaching issues, to injuries, to regression from certain players
