He sounds like a man prepared to make some changes in preparation for the coming contest.
Should this be true, what are the changes you'd like to see?
I think we can forego the "fire this guy, fire that guy, cut this player" stuff as it has already filled four other threads - and we know it's not happening this week.
I'm all about:
- less zone and more man on defense
- continue helping the LT in protection and do it even more (FB,RB,TE - bring in a lineman as eligible, anything!)
- rollout Blake - buy him time any way necessary - let him run from the rollout if it's there too
- don't give up on the run game too soon - Yeldon is not being taken full advantage of
On offense
1.
Feed TJ Yeldon the ball more- he's one of the most efficient players in football on a per touch basis, but yet there are some games where he barely touches the ball. TJ should touch the ball a minimum of 20 times per game, 15 or so rushes and 5+ catches. He's one of the best players on our offense and is a game-flow proof RB, if we're down by a couple of scores, you can throw him the ball, if we're up by a couple of scores, then put the ball in his belly. There is no reason why TJ should ever get scripted out of the gameplan as his versatility is valuable no matter what the score is.
2.
Phase Donte Moncrief out of the gameplan- This guy is one of the worst receivers in football, he's one of the most
targeted receivers in the game but yet is only catching like a
3rd of his targets. It's borderline malpractice to continually feed Moncrief targets as he isn't doing anything with them. I get that you paid him $9M ( a colossal mistake) but at this point, it's a sunk cost. He's hurting your more than he's helping you.
3.
Feature DJ Chark more- Whereas Donte Moncrief is incapable of making big plays downfield, DJ Chark has been the opposite of that. Evident by the two spectacular catches he made against KC, he almost came down with another catch downfield last week against Dallas. For the life of me, I don't understand why this offense isn't taking advantage of Charks athleticism more, down the field, in the red zone, on jet sweeps, end around's etc.... DJ has a rare skill set and needs to be featured more in this offense, 5-6 targets a week and a couple of designed runs (to get him out in space) would be a great start.
4.
Feature more designed runs with Blake- he almost always picks up chunk yardage when he keeps it on a read option, as DE's seemingly always crash down hard on our RB's. I don't understand why we don't take advantage of his athleticism more often. Blake isn't a guy that is going to consistently beat you with his arm, so use his legs.
5.
More designed passes to the RB's- I'm not talking about emergency check downs or screens, because we are frankly not a good screen team. I'm talking about arrow routes and option routes, TJ Yeldon and Jamaal Charles have the quickness and route running ability to beat most linebackers on these route concepts. Take advantage of these matchups
6.
More chipping to help our tackles- for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why Nathaniel Hackett didn't have his RB's chip against Dee Ford a couple of weeks ago. Its one of the easiest way to slow down speed off the edge, this simply shows a lack of awareness and is borderline unacceptable, considering how bad Jeremy Parnell was getting beat by Ford. They didn't start chipping until the 4th quarter.... let that set in a moment. We don't have bookend tackles, so have your RB's chip to buy your QB some extra time, this is going to be vitally important this week against Hou.
7.
Phase out the "fade" concept in the red zone- This is one of the more least efficient passes in football, it has a very low success rate. Instead, run the ball from spread more in the red zone, as this has shown to be one of the most efficient ways of scoring in the red zone.
8.
Feature your best players and take advantage of matchups- this goes back to getting TJ Yeldon and Chark more involved, but the same thing could be said for Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole. Dede wasn't targeted until the second half of the Dallas game.... it's unacceptable for two reasons, he's probably your best receiver and easily had the best matchup facing the Cowboys interior CB's as opposed to their stingy outside corners. Dallas has been vulnerable over the middle of the field all season long, but yet we didn't attack it with our best receiver. That's unacceptable, Nathaniel Hackett needs to be more consistent in attacking matchups the Jaguars have an advantage in and feeding the ball incessantly to his best players. This is a matchup-driven league, take advantage of good matchups.
On Defense
1.
More tight man to man coverage, while bringing an extra rusher on third down - if you watched the 49ers-Packers game last night, Robert Saleh (former Jags linebacker coach) was able to get the 49ers defense off the field on third down multiple times by playing tight man to man coverage and blitzing. You force a QB to make a quick decision by doing this, you are obviously going to be selective when doing this, but if your pass rush isn't getting home, the most average of QB's are going to pick you apart if you play zone behind it. I'd like to see the Jaguars get more aggressive on obvious passing downs if the front 4 isn't getting home.
2.
Have Myles Jack, Telvin Smith, or Ronnie Harrison spy mobile QB's- for some reason our defense always seems to give up big rushing production to mobile QB's. This is unacceptable given the talent, speed, and sheer athleticism on our defense. You aren't going to completely shutout rushing production for these mobile QB's, but there's absolutely no reason why the Mariotas and Dak Prescott's of the world consistently get chunk yardage on the ground against our defense.
