Marrones' Monday pressure--err, presser began with him laying quite a bit of blame on himself and his coordinators.
https://www.jaguars.com/video/marrone-we...-as-a-team

He sounds like a man prepared to make some changes in preparation for the coming contest.

Should this be true, what are the changes you'd like to see?

I think we can forego the "fire this guy, fire that guy, cut this player" stuff as it has already filled four other threads - and we know it's not happening this week.

I'm all about:
  • less zone and more man on defense
  • continue helping the LT in protection and do it even more (FB,RB,TE - bring in a lineman as eligible, anything!)
  • rollout Blake - buy him time any way necessary - let him run from the rollout if it's there too
  • don't give up on the run game too soon - Yeldon is not being taken full advantage of

Completely agree on all points.
Defensively do a better job with mobile QB's can't have the lanes Prescott had and no one getting even close.
About the running game absolutely don't abandon it for no reason. If Yeldon gets 6-7 (like he has a few times over the past 2 weeks)yard on first down, keep pounding it. They used to run Fournette into a wall sometimes when he got just 1-2 yard on first down and when we are actually producing we stop running.
I would also like them to stop thinking Moncrief is a good match-up on 50/50 balls or downfield throws. He's lazy and putting in zero effort at times, give those downfield shots to Cole or Chark and limit Moncrief role to the underneath stuff if he bothers to show up there.
Bring in Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman to run the offense.
Said it before and will say it again; the Texans got caught flat footed by the Titans running wildcat plays, throwing in their other QB for trick plays etc

Jags need to get creative on offense
I agree with your points NYC. And its a least a little comforting to hear they know change is needed.

Less zone/more man for sure. Especially now that most offenses moving forward don't have a WR like Hill and OBJ. (DHop and AB is all)

I'd like to see more emphasis on adding a QB spy for these mobile guys. Looks like we've been relying on raw speed vs actually planning for them and it's not working.

Agree completely on rolling out Blake. For one, he's significantly more accurate and throws a better ball on the move for some reason. Roll him out away from Watt to keep blockers on one side.

On offense

1. Feed TJ Yeldon the ball more- he's one of the most efficient players in football on a per touch basis, but yet there are some games where he barely touches the ball. TJ should touch the ball a minimum of 20 times per game, 15 or so rushes and 5+ catches. He's one of the best players on our offense and is a game-flow proof RB, if we're down by a couple of scores, you can throw him the ball, if we're up by a couple of scores, then put the ball in his belly. There is no reason why TJ should ever get scripted out of the gameplan as his versatility is valuable no matter what the score is.

2. Phase Donte Moncrief out of the gameplan- This guy is one of the worst receivers in football, he's one of the most targeted receivers in the game but yet is only catching like a 3rd of his targets. It's borderline malpractice to continually feed Moncrief targets as he isn't doing anything with them. I get that you paid him $9M ( a colossal mistake) but at this point, it's a sunk cost. He's hurting your more than he's helping you.

3. Feature DJ Chark more- Whereas Donte Moncrief is incapable of making big plays downfield, DJ Chark has been the opposite of that. Evident by the two spectacular catches he made against KC, he almost came down with another catch downfield last week against Dallas. For the life of me, I don't understand why this offense isn't taking advantage of Charks athleticism more, down the field, in the red zone, on jet sweeps, end around's etc.... DJ has a rare skill set and needs to be featured more in this offense, 5-6 targets a week and a couple of designed runs (to get him out in space) would be a great start.

4. Feature more designed runs with Blake- he almost always picks up chunk yardage when he keeps it on a read option, as DE's seemingly always crash down hard on our RB's. I don't understand why we don't take advantage of his athleticism more often. Blake isn't a guy that is going to consistently beat you with his arm, so use his legs.

5. More designed passes to the RB's- I'm not talking about emergency check downs or screens, because we are frankly not a good screen team. I'm talking about arrow routes and option routes, TJ Yeldon and Jamaal Charles have the quickness and route running ability to beat most linebackers on these route concepts. Take advantage of these matchups

6. More chipping to help our tackles-  for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why Nathaniel Hackett didn't have his RB's chip against Dee Ford a couple of weeks ago. Its one of the easiest way to slow down speed off the edge, this simply shows a lack of awareness and is borderline unacceptable, considering how bad Jeremy Parnell was getting beat by Ford. They didn't start chipping until the 4th quarter.... let that set in a moment. We don't have bookend tackles, so have your RB's chip to buy your QB some extra time, this is going to be vitally important this week against Hou.

7. Phase out the "fade" concept in the red zone- This is one of the more least efficient passes in football, it has a very low success rate. Instead, run the ball from spread more in the red zone, as this has shown to be one of the most efficient ways of scoring in the red zone.

8. Feature your best players and take advantage of matchups- this goes back to getting TJ Yeldon and Chark more involved, but the same thing could be said for Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole. Dede wasn't targeted until the second half of the Dallas game.... it's unacceptable for two reasons, he's probably your best receiver and easily had the best matchup facing the Cowboys interior CB's as opposed to their stingy outside corners. Dallas has been vulnerable over the middle of the field all season long, but yet we didn't attack it with our best receiver. That's unacceptable, Nathaniel Hackett needs to be more consistent in attacking matchups the Jaguars have an advantage in and feeding the ball incessantly to his best players. This is a matchup-driven league, take advantage of good matchups.

On Defense

1. More tight man to man coverage, while bringing an extra rusher on third down - if you watched the 49ers-Packers game last night, Robert Saleh (former Jags linebacker coach) was able to get the 49ers defense off the field on third down multiple times by playing tight man to man coverage and blitzing. You force a QB to make a quick decision by doing this, you are obviously going to be selective when doing this, but if your pass rush isn't getting home, the most average of QB's are going to pick you apart if you play zone behind it. I'd like to see the Jaguars get more aggressive on obvious passing downs if the front 4 isn't getting home.

2. Have Myles Jack, Telvin Smith, or Ronnie Harrison spy mobile QB's- for some reason our defense always seems to give up big rushing production to mobile QB's. This is unacceptable given the talent, speed, and sheer athleticism on our defense. You aren't going to completely shutout rushing production for these mobile QB's, but there's absolutely no reason why the Mariotas and Dak Prescott's of the world consistently get chunk yardage on the ground against our defense.
More man-to-man on defense. Less zone [BLEEP] please.

Stop giving up on the ground game even if you're down by 10 points.

Stop the 5 step drop [BLEEP] and let's either go shot gun or 3 step drop until they can get that LT position comfortable.

No more dropped turnovers. If the ball is in your hands. Better imagine it being your infant child being thrown at you and you catch it to save it's life.

Protect the damn football on offense.

That's it really.

Protect the football is #1. 7 turnovers the last 2 games.

This is spot on.
need to spy mobile QBs
Roll out Blake worked with the pats and they tried to do it with tacks but they spied him - so hackett gave up on it no rollout at chiefs and only 1 at boys not gonna get it done. its like anything that works soon as a team stops it one time hackett shoves it to the back of playbook. Sometimes it isnt going to work every time that does not mean give it up.

Just a quick ? in general.

If you don't count garbage time throws, TDS and Stats. because its garbage time. Why do you count the Int during the same Garbage time when he might be forcing to make something happen?
I hope the coaches think of some this stuff
Get more aggressive on the blitzes. You don't have to overdo it but at least use it more than the once or twice a game we do at present. We need to get back to being Sacksonville some kind of way.
Nice post jag for life well thought out.
3 step drop quick stuff
Stop throwing to Moncreef’
Where’s Bohannon?
Shorten the game. Use all of the play clock every time, especially when kicking the ball.
So happy to find Jag fans with voracious appetites for analysis! Thanks everyone.

Concur with majority of posts .

If I was in charge of the Jaguars Week Seven Game Plan:

Offense: Keep it simple and take whatever they give us. Use motion/sweep/option plays over and over mixing up the directions randomly throwing in a receiver reverse here and there both fake and handoff.

Send Westbrook and Cole in crossing post routes then dump the ball to Moncrief in the seam.

Repeat that play with Greene and Chark and Yeldon so Cole, Moncrief and Westbrook stay fresh.

Repeat the play again, this time Bortles takes off.

Now that he defense is gassed run the sweep play again.

Repeat and mix up the plays and primary targets.

Defense:

Stick with what they execute well. With my offense scoring TDs -should be 28-10 at the half - they will be playing on fire shutdown ball.

Lol .... I need to resolve easier problems like world hunger prior even thinking about taking on complex subject matters like the Jags poor offensive production.
