Doug Marrone on Jags' D: 'Are we giving them too much?'

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...m-too-much

In the past two weeks, the Jags have given up 70 total points. Seventy. Coach Doug Marrone said he's concerned and questioned whether the defensive scheme is too complicated.
"Are we giving them too much?".

You're the HC. If you really have to ask that question what the [BLEEP] are you doing all week during practice, film study and preparation? That's what I don't get about this offense and defense.

They keep doing the same [BLEEP] over and over and over again and teams are catching onto it. This coaching staff needs to figure it out. I watched a San Francisco team fight it's [BLEEP] off last night and they're a 1 - 5 football team but still manage to show up and look competitive.
Yeah the defensive scheme is too complicated. You have the best Defensive personnel in the league to run man-to-man and you drop them into zone coverages and teams beat us with all the zone beaters. Wonder why were losing... hmmm...

We're better off going man to man and blitzing every single play than continuing with this nonsense. At least then youd know the team has an actual personnel requirement to beat your defense and can't just out scheme you.
When asked coming out of halftime of the dallas game the reported asked marone what adjustments they will make in the second half to get back in the game. Morons response is priceless. None we are going to keep doing the same thing and try and get somthing to gether we need to execute better.

No adjustments what the Bleep does he just go in at halftime and eat a bologna sammach. this fool needs to be gone
3 and 2? Lets give receivers 28 yards of cushion.
Our LBs can run with anyone. Our CBs are the best man-to-man cover corners.

And we play 8-10 yards downfield in zone coverage and wonder why they're beating us underneath.
Zone coverage does work, let's not act like if we played man all game then there wouldn't be big plays.

The big part of zone D is properly passing receivers through coverage, we have been just awful at that, LB's and DB's. The second is QB pressure, you can't keep zone coverage forever and D players get caught between staying with a receiver or their zone assignment. What makes no sense with how we are using zone is like you guys state, how soft and off the coverage is. Part of the reason the D can't get off the field on 3rd down is that they are usually in a 3rd and 3 and have to play the run, pass and QB scramble.

It was mind boggling how we continued to just give Dallas 7-10 yards underneath all day for fear of a deep ball.

I'm not in the panic mode yet, we can turn this around, but hearing Marrone's press conference on Sunday night and I don't know if anyone say Jalens one word, very depressed locker room interview after the game? If we don't sort ourselves out, this season could get real ugly.
All I've heard about our defense is how simple and vanilla it is.

So how do they have too much?

If you're giving your offense "too much"... IDK what they are gonna do the rest of the year lol

No-one is suggesting that the team would hold people to 0 points if they played man coverage. The problem with Zone is that it's easily exploited by an OC/HC/QB that knows what it's looking at and what it's looking for. There was a time where this was not the case in our particular scheme. Seattle had really good personnel and a new creative scheme that teams did not know how to beat. This same scheme, that we run, to a fault, has since then been exposed multiple times. It's too easy to get our guys out of position to make a play and what you see is us giving up big chunks of yardage, not because of a lack of talent or execution on defense, but because our guys get caught out of position by the play design.

At least with Man coverage it forces the other team to beat you with their guys. There are definitely guys in this league that can beat ours in man. But at least in man, we'd be forcing the QB to make quick reads and won't give him time to go through his progressions. There's been way too many times where it's been 3rd and long and our defense is just waiting for the QB to throw it. This is how we get gashed.

Of course it's too late at this point. I don't expect a huge defensive shake up. But as a fan, looking in, it's frustrating. I don't like that the team I cheer for on Sundays runs the same boring defensive scheme as half the league and doesn't do anything creative or unique with the amount of talent on this roster. I'd even settle for a mix of zone/man at this point. Maybe have some guys play zone in the middle and have our CBs man up on the outside with our safeties coming in to help protect the deep ball.... something different.
Giving them too much eh? So what are defensive players stupid? Plenty other teams give their players too much with way more exotic stuff and they seem to get it quite well. They've been in the same system for a couple years now and still don't get the playbook?

Knowing the playbook and executing are two different things.  Marrone is using coach speak to cover for our secondary not being right places and trying to make plays being in the wrong places

I think this “simple/vanilla” thing is overblown too. It’s certainly not an exotic array of looks, but there are some moving parts/variations in the zone coverages Wash is calling and the players are not always executing them. The nickel, the SS, and the LBs have all had their moments botching plays and the corners have had lapses as well when they misread receivers breaks or didn’t pick up a player entering their zone very well.

I think the defensive talent is underachieving as much - or nearly as much as Wash is failing to adjust what isn’t working in real time.
I wonder if Ramsey's lingering ankle issue is at least a part of the reason why Wash is leaning more towards Zone this year so far and less Man-to-Man. We'll see soon enough I suppose. Plenty of football left.
This is the no duh article of the day.

I see... Marrone was saying I think we're giving them too much "zone" plays lol
Which is what we've all been saying.

Glad we're all on the same page now.  Cool
