Well, if they trade Fowler, we know they have resigned themselves to not making the playoffs.

From another perspective, Smoot (a pick most were not too keen on when made) has been a healthy inactive all year.  If the team does not trade Fowler, you can argue it's as much an indictment of Smoot's lack of ability/development as it is anything else.  If Smoot were active, in the rotation and making plays, it would be easier to trade Fowler at this point if there is demand for him.

The playoffs are essentially off the table. This team would need to go 7-1 at worst to bring the tie breakers back into balance and have sole lead of 1st place, barring Houston and Tennessee collapse, Indy isn't looking too shabby either. We are in dead last place through half of our games this year. It will take a small miracle to make the playoffs. Smoot is trash and you don't trade gifted players. Fowler will take a short term, team friendly/incentive oriented deal or he will hit FA.

If Fowler sniffs free agency he’s gone. Too many suitors to offer a team friendly deal. He’ll go on and have success in a 3-4 defense somewhere while we cling to our tired big end schemes.
With the season effectively over, I think we need to be open to (almost) all offers.

Ramsey, Bouye, Campbell, Ngakoue, Smith and Jack should be off the table and I like Harrison too, but that’s about it.

And I would really question the sense in blowing valuable draft picks to bring in stop-gap players for this season. Time to look ahead now.
Fowler would have to garner a third or better to be worth it to me and that's highly unlikely. So he's probably here for the duration of his contract and moving on to bigger money elsewhere in free agency.

If they are a bit healthier after the bye this team could make a push still. Disappointed in all of those just throwing in the towel on this season. Plenty of reasons to hold out a bit of hope.

I don't think we'll get a compensatory 3rd for Fowler the way things are this season. I believe we'll get a 5th.

It will depend on the size of the contract, not his play/stats this year, all though those influence each other sometimes.

Pass rushers tend to get overpaid in FA, so I could definitely foresee a fourth. A third would be gravy
Quote: According to NBC Sports' Peter King.

The Rams, speaking of “baseball trades,” want a pass-rusher. I hear defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is lukewarm on Denver’s Ray (having coached him two years ago), and if the Jags make disappointing high first-round pick Dante Fowler Jr., available, the Rams would have interest. L.A. is unlikely to deal swing guard Jamon Brown for a late-round pick, though there’s been interest. He’s a low-cost insurance guy for the line.

I can think of several teams with immediate needs for a pass rusher. The Rams are one, the Raiders could definitely use one as well. There would probably be teams lining up to get Fowler. Let's put his name out there are see what offers we get. We may be surprised. I mean, the Raiders got a first rounder for Amari Cooper, so anything is possible.

I doubt the raiders are interested. It appears they are currently stockpiling draft picks, not giving them out.
Fowler is 24. Had 8 sacks last season and a very good playoff performance. 2 sacks through 8 games so far this season. You also have to factor in the pressures, QB hits, etc. Teams may not see much concern for current season performance. There will be teams willing to give more than we may expect for him. Regardless of his off-field incidents and how much of that is credited towards the additions of Campbell and Dareus last season. 3-5 doesn't look too good from the current standings. But, the team isn't eliminated yet. He will likely be gone with the temptation of FA money and get overpaid. Make a move now to help the offense for this season or next. I prefer this season. Depends what the Jags choose to do.

I don't know if the Chargers' brain trust feels the same way, though.

Gus Bradley's input on Dante Fowler likely is the key to whether the LA Chargers have serious interest in trading for him by tomorrow afternoon or signing him as an UFA if he hits the open market next March.  Skill level,  work ethic, and character all should be factored in.   Bradley can provide a first hand opinion on all of these components.

I think a 2nd is possible, especially if there is a bidding war with multiple suitors.

He’s a 24 year old pass rusher with some production being miscasted in a 4-3 defense. 3-4 teams seem interested in him.

I don't want to hope too much but f the market for him is strong then maybe yes we can get good value in return. I would actively explore Oline/TE that can help right away in a trade. (More likely OL help, but hey if SF is in the mix and they want to discuss Kittle...Big Grin...unlikely, I know)

EDIT:
Pellissero added that the initial asking price was multiple draft picks, we'll see how it goes from there.
I’d trade him for a half decent O-Lineman and a later round draft pick like say a fourth
This tweet is from prior to this past weekend's game where Ngakoue got his 5th sack of the season:

https://twitter.com/zach_goodall/status/...7919326210

Fowler's sack number and pressures appear to be limited more by his snap count than necessarily by a wide talent margin between he and Ngakoue though I do believe Ngakoue is the better of the two.  It would have to be a late 1st or early 2nd for me as I'd have plans on re-signing Fowler if I were the Jags front office.  Compensation would have to be significant to let a young, ascending pass rusher go when the season is far from over and we should be getting healthier thru the bye. Ultimately I don't think we will be letting him go. Teams don't give up after 8 games and a 3-5 record and trading him would signal a giving up on the season to me.

Also, I don't believe he can sign a deal or would be forced to sign a deal prior to hitting free agency so it would effectively be an 8 or 9 game rental and he'd be a free agent if I understand the situation correctly. He's worth more to us than what any team should be willing to pay for him at this point IMO.
Schefter just said on ESPN they’re looking for two 3rd rounders for Fowler

Wow! If we got that, I'd be thrilled! I'd be thrilled with one 3rd rounder.
Fowler traded to Rams. Compensation unknown at the moment.
I LOVE THIS TRADE!!!!!

2 3rd Rounders for a guy who was going to leave anywayS

EDIT:

Awww only a 3rd and a 5th
