Starting in the third quarter and breaking down all the 2nd and short/3rd and short scenarios:

7:34 in the third 2nd and 2:
Bortles has to hurry a throw a bit to Westbrook on a shallow out due to a blitzing DB and he also has to fit it over a leaping LB  so it's off target and incomplete.

3rd and 2 - Bortles hits Grinnage down the sideline (who snuck out of the inside of a tight trips formation uncovered) for a big gain.

2nd and 4 -  6:29 in the third :
Handoff to Yeldon who converts for a first down

2:24 in the third  2nd and 1  :
Blake is looking for and has Bell underneath and Westbrook 15 yards deeper but Walker gets beaten badly and Blake is sacked

9:22 in the fourth 2nd and 4

Blake hits Westbrook on an intermediate out route for 20 yards

3rd and 4  -  8:31 in the fourth

Blake hits Yeldon on a what's basically a seam route for 37 yards

So, basically, up until now all of this passing on 2nd or 3rd and short has really been just fine. Now it gets ugly:

2nd and 1 - 4:35 in the fourth q:

Blake has time, room to run and three open guys. He does this:

Is that a playcalling error?  Uhh, I don't know. Maybe, but it had been working all day. *shrug* Seems like a bad decision and throw to me from #5.

4th and 1   - Blake scrambles for the conversion

2nd and 2 with 3:49 to play  - Ball at midfield.

NOW THIS, THIS IS where I'd really consider running the ball.

Blake throws to Moncrief on an intermediate in route. Overthrown.

Now it's 3rd and 2 and you know you're in a two down situation - but they throw again and the ball is batted.
Sigh.

So all in all -- I definitely question two playcalls late in the fourth there, but most of the passes on short yardage situations throughout the game were fine and the majority were effective.

I hope they find better balance (i.e. find a run game) after the bye.
Thanks again for the review. I know in the middle of the game it is much easier to criticize when execution is the issue. I wonder if the non throwing shoulder started to be an issue. Pain can make you hesitant to take a hit. So yeah my earlier ask about him doing a quick snap wasn't going to ever work.

I guess it is the little things that separate these QBs from being bottom tier and good enough for winning. It just feels like 1999 was the last reliable QB play and offense we had.

Edit:
To clarify, I mean from a passing perspective. Those Fred Taylor/Mo Jo running teams sure had one hell of a line that would clip 2 yards like it was nothing. But the WRs on those teams... Yuck!
