As I would expect any team with QB issues to do.  

A good front office is always going to have one eye on options outside fo the organization that could help this team.

We were solid offensive team when we were healthy. We aren't a drop back and sling it team. Nothing but back-up quality receivers and TE's. Inconsistent offensive line at best. Until we get that edge back we're going to be pondering every move the team makes.

SF crushed OAK last night with an undrafted 3rd string QB. Mullen had 262 yards passing and a 152 passer rating, the highest debut rating since 1970. Yes, it against the Raiders that are in full dumpster mode. Regardless, there are capable backup QBs, but they need to have protection, poise, and confidence. Right now I do not think BB5 has any of these.

To be honest Beathard doesn't look half bad either. I honestly think it's Shanahan more than anything..

I really love Marrone's retro-approach that flies in the face of everything the league is pushing. I like going against the grain of the status quo and the wussification of football. The direction of the league sucks. 

Unfortunately it will require the Jags to have more horses than currently reside in their stable. And it will mean playing with a disadvantage to other offenses as the league continues to reward pass attacks with rule after rule -  and the offensive holding call in the NFL becomes akin to traveling in the NBA. 

The league doesn't want a smash-mouth football team anymore. I'd absolutely love to see the Jags pull off doing it anyway, but the apparent disadvantages seem to be too much to overcome. 

Hopefully the process of finding a new QB, a TE, and adding a lineman or two will allow them to simply hybridize their approach to lean just a bit more on the pass  -  taking a little heat off the run game and the defense. Not a 180 degree turn. Just a minor shift in focus and balance.

Sam Bradford has now been cut, and won't cost anything for Jags to poke around.

Jags should sign bradford but he gets hurt way too much

Yeah, we're basically the Dave Stewart Arizona Dbacks from a few years ago. It's obvious the way the league wants to go and it's obvious the way the analytics say you should go...but damnit you like the old school and you're going to do your best to keep sacrifice bunting and stacking your teams with grit and effort players over pure talent.

Man, as a huge baseball and baseball analytics fan that was really just depressing to type. I remember how that regime was mocked and ridiculed while the rest of the league was lapping them. Now that's my team. Sigh.

At this point they need to forget about keeping the Colts’ defense guessing and polish a handful of plays and execute them perfectly. Give Greene a shot at running a few routes as a decoy since I have noticed he draws double coverage.

Yeah it is crazy.  I used football stats for accepted penalties and the number of offensive holding calls per team are down year over year.  And the Patriots of course average the least per game.  With the increased number of snaps the defense is facing a tremendous uphill task.  It would be hard to pull the numbers but I imagine running teams average higher offensive holding calls because the refs give extra scrutiny to the line play.

In the Rams (also bottom of the league for called offensive holds) versus Green Bay game, Clay Mathews was getting mauled.  I saw his head snapping back like a boxing match and his shoulder pads got turned and jerked.  No hands to the face and barely a blip of a holding call.  And yet when he does get home you are likely to see the roughing the passer call against him.

Pretty much. It's not really earth shattering news to hear the tea was "poking around".  It's also not a shock that the price to trade for someone else's backup was too high.

The QB issue isn't going to be addressed mid-season via trade, or by picking up someone's cast-offs off the street.  It's going to require an off season to identify the right target.  I think that when the dust settles, the team will sign a competent veteran, and draft for the future.  I don't see Bortles lasting beyond this year.

So Henne and Bortles 2.0. great, terrific. cant see the team getting it wrong again.
