He will just back up Kessler. Nothing ground-breaking here.

It's a #3 QB insurance signing - not a "compete to start" signing. LOL.

What do you propose at LT?

Signing a guy off the street to back up your back up QB is absolutely nothing like trying to fix Left Tackle mid-season.  Fixing LT midseason is a tough get for any team that didn't have depth coming in - and we're on our third guy there.

 - Hyde was an easy get and he (on paper) seems to fill a role they were missing due to injury.
 - Picks for a rotational player wh had 8 games on his contract wasn't a bad move by any stretch.
 - Signing a "just a guy" to be your "just a guy" #3 QB is a sidebar that likely never makes any impact whatsoever.

I'm not sure what miracles we're expecting here.  They aren't likely to try and supplant Bortles unless he has multiple consecutive meltdown games. And he just had a pretty good outing in London to offset that. There's a really good chance he begins 2019 as the starter as well, though I wouldn't bank on him finishing it.

I think the die is cast on this.  They already have the injuries to point at as the reason we aren't effective running the ball.  And because we can't run that impacts how Bortles plays.  For this season, I don't think there is much to do.  For next year, well at least they got an extra draft pick to start out.

If he even makes it that far.  If he's being brought in as insurance with the Bortles injury rumors, he'll be here long enough to evaluate.  There's really nothing here to get too worked up over.

Sounds possibly like a precursor to putting Bortles on I.R. with a mystery injury. It's been done before. A guy with a big contract is playing terribly, so out of nowhere, he mysteriously gets "injured". The team puts him on I.R. and replaces him in the lineup to appease fans and try to "right the ship". As much as I hate Jones, this move only makes sense if Bortles is going on I.R. and Kessler needs a backup.

Sure we could there is Kap, Bridgwater, tebow, ect ect ect

Those guys are better passers than Jones. He's an "interception machine".

I'm all for benching Bortles because we already know what we have in him and unless Texans get blown out by the Broncos this week my hopes for this season aren't exactly high. But to say this move ONLY makes sense if they intend to do some circus act of "hide the bortles" and put him on I.R just "because" is sheer lunacy. Jones is a backup to the backup... we signed him because hell, with our luck this year, I wouldn't be surprised if Bortles and Kessler got hurt in the same week and we had Logan Cooke out there chucking passes.
My guess is Jones is on the roster until the day after the Pittsburgh game.

This just feels like the typical Coughlin signing to pick the brains of someone who has been in the system of an opponent on the schedule.
Maybe they are advance scouting the Steelers in addition to protecting themselves from Blake’s injury ....? We do play them after Indy and Tom Coughlin is known to use such tactics.

Was Landry Jones with the Steelers in 2018 at all though?  Because they have a different OC this year.  Last year was Haley - this year is Fichtner.  Of course Fichtner was Jones' QB coach - so he probably knows his system to some degree too.

They played Pitt twice last year.

How much more scouting do they really need?
OMG. Landy Jones? Wow.
Guess having a LT problem is taking its toll on the quarterbacks now.

Seeing many games Jones has played, I can honestly say, I might be more confident to have Logan Cooke as a QB than I would with Jones.

He was with the team in the offseason and was cut after the preseason.

The team is 3-5.

They need any advantage they can get at this point. And I’m sure Pittsburgh is chopping at the bit for payback from last year.

I dunno maybe it’s just me but I would’ve thought people would be happy the team is still fighting to find a way to get back into this and hasn’t given up hope yet.
It's just an insurance signing. Bortles shoulder is worn out. He's up to 290 attempts on the year. And he had 41 in London and 61 in Kansas City alone. He's already 56 pass attempts ahead of where he was last year through mid season. He just can't carry the workload right now.

They really need to get this [BLEEP] running game going again. That's the main thing holding this team back.

I don't care if they have to bookend both OT's with TE's and line-up a FB anymore. If they can average 3.5 - 4.0 on 1st or 2nd downs it'll go a long way taking pressure off of Blake. I don't know how the hell they've fallen off this badly in the ground game. We only really lost Robinson on that line.

Not to mention, my fantasy team really needs Fournette to return. Looks like fantasy football is the only winning season I might see this year. It probably won't be the Jags.

He was only released at the beginning of September, so he had access to the playbook up to that point.  He is familiaar with Fichter as well, making this signing even more easy to interpret.  He's an insurance policy and they can pick his brain for potential nuggets about the Pittsburgh playbook.  Win win for them.  He'll never see the field.

It's not the same team as last year.  Neither are we for that matter.  You can never have enough scouting information in the NFL.

His non-throwing shoulder is injured.
Hmmm...why are we just now hearing about Bortles’ injury? And he played injured two years and kept it quiet? Something is not right here.

But at least there are other options at QB. That alone can keep fans’ hope alive even if Jones isn’t top notch. He backed up Ben so style wise is a fit plus, as mentioned by others, he has some insider info for our defense.

Because the team is under no obligation to provide any information on any potential injuries as of right now.
