I want to gather the opinions of the posters here about Oregon QB Justin Herbert. I think he comes out in the 2019 NFL Draft and I believe he’s a consensus top 5 selection. I just don’t see AS MANY NFL traits as a lot of pro scouts do. I know he’s big with a big arm, but what are those intangibles that make a good QB. Does anyone know about his:
1. Leadership qualities
2. Competitiveness
3. Intelligence
I also just want to talk more about this QB since his name will be heavily tied to the Jaguars (along with Lock, Grier, Haskins, etc.) in the coming months
He's not that good. Just look at the team's record this and last season in a Pac12 conference that's so weak, SEC teams like Florida, Tennessee, KY would go undefeated over there. He's not a winner. Overrated.
Honestly I think his big arm, size, mobility are why he's ranked high currently. Which are great things to have, I think he has issues with handling pressure and his accuracy is unfortunately an inconsistent point of his game.
I haven't put my finger on it yet, but I just feel uneasy watching him play. Between some of his awkward reactions to pressure and his sometimes wide stance, I have a hard time seeing him develop much pocket presence at the next level.
I actually liked Josh Allen last year, and I don't have the same confidence in this kid beyond just having a strong arm.
Maybe he's moldable - but he's gonna need some work before he starts IMO.
From a Jags perspective, I'm trying to hone in on players that might be potential post bye week starters as rookies, and he doesn't give me confidence in that way.
I think there are things to work with there, but he probably needs to go back to school. I liked him a lot at the beginning of the season, but as the nagging injuries hit him and the O-Line, he became increasingly inconsistent and that concerns me. I'm not nearly as convinced that he will declare for the draft as much as I am Haskins. IMO, Haskins is the closest thing to a finished product in this draft and I still would sit him at least halfway through the 2019 season. I hear Herbert is probably leaning towards staying in school, which makes it even more important that we pick ahead of the Giants, in one way or another. There is a significant dropoff in QB prospects from Haskins to Herbert and then from Herbert to Grier and Lock. Not that those other guys can't succeed, but they may take a little longer to develop IMO.

They are pretty nebulous traits to try learn about a QB prospect. For guys like Baker and Watson their leadership and competitiveness is self evident but a lot of guys there's really no way to tell.
He's plenty of pro traits there. He has one of my favourite passing styles over the last few years , just really effortless velocity and motion , rarely floats anything he doesn't have to (not sure if I'm over emphasizing this after Bortles but it is pretty jarring see the difference in passing levels).
My issue is he's a 3rd year starter and still pretty raw at the basics.

Herbert reminds me of Goff a little bit.
It's all there and under the right coaching (McVay) he could be lights out. Under poor coaching (Fisher), he will look like a bust. Not every QB is like this (Mayfield) but this is just the vibe I'm getting from him.

If he was at any other program, he would have been starting much earlier in his college career. Haskins could come in here with a reworked Oline, running game and hopefully still top notch D and really do well. Like Big Ben in his early Steelers days.

Yeah - posted in the QBs thread earlier that my very early impressions are that Haskins and Grier are the only two I'm getting the feeling could come in after the bye in their rookie year and not wilt.
I have plenty of guys to check out still but -
Herbert, Jones, Jackson and Lock don't give me the same confidence about potential rookie starts.

You know Patrick Mahomes went 13-16 as a starter in college right?... team record doesnt matter at all... that argument is invalid... a lot a qbs are just on bad team, plus college teams have to put up ridiculous numbers... if that were the case every national champs QB would be drafted

He's my favorite QB prospect to come out since Luck. I really hope he becomes a Jaguar because I think he is goong to be a stud in this league for a long time.

I get how you can say Herbert’s not a winner, his record isn’t overly impressive at 8-4. But last year he started on 8 games and went 6-2. When he was out, his team was 1-4. Herbert’s best football is ahead of him. I believe he’s the best QB Prospect with Haskins right behind.
Ideally, I’d like a Foles/Herbert pick up. Foles can reopen our Super Bowl window (competent QB play, healthy starters on offense) and teach Herbert how the pro game is to be played and prepared for.
