I was just reading, the success rate of selecting a franchise QB in the draft is around 7%. and of those 14% were in the first round.

WOW!

Better to beef up the team around the QB, Shoot you might pick a franchise guy and he get injured by during his 2nd and 3rd year... then you are back at it.
This is what happens when you HAVE TO draft a QB. Better not miss and the Jags missed with Blaine and Blake. chances are with the FO, they will miss again.

The chance with EVERY front office is that they will miss, and the more colleges move away from pro-style football sets the worse it will become. The game is moving into a downward spiral.
The point is you will only potentially pick a franchise QB 7 out of 100 times, maybe.....

Franchise QBs are a crap shoot. I really am starting to believe that the coaches are more and more important in player development to consistently achieve success in the NFL and how to game plan with the current players on the roster year over year.

Can the coaches get the most out of the atheletes they put on the field.

Marrone has failed to do that this year.

The Browns can be used as a example. Cleveland sucked until Hue Jackson was fired.
These are the top Qbs selected in the past 5 years.Think about how many said they are the franchise QB and how many have actually become one. I mean some of them had exciting first years and they just fell off every year past that. I did not include this years draft picks.

Jamis Winston- good first year fell off after
Marcus Mariota- good first year fell off after
Blake Bortels- Bad first year continued to get better untill this year still could be potential with a diff coach
Deshaun watson - Good rookiee Year until hurt Continues this year but not quite as good. wait and see
Teddy Bridgwater - ok first season got hurt moved around form team to team
Mitchell Tribiski - Good first year getting better this year
Jimmy garapalo- looked to be the real deal has not played entire season yet injured
jerod goff - claimed a bust his rookiee year by Fisher, has gotten much better with diff coach
Carson wents - first year looked to be real deal then got hurt, this year not quite as good hurt again Foles may replace him
Derek Carr - Good first year steadily declined
Patrick Mahomes- great first year will have to wait to see

So it seems finding a Franchise QB is not as easy as some might think and just because he may be a Franchise QB does not always mean he will be an elite QB. geoff wentz trubiski and moahmes maybe the best of the bunch but even they are showing signs that they might not be as advertised. These are my opinions not stated as facts so some of yall might think im wrong.and yes i butchered their names.

Or until they drafted Mayfield...
They were failing with Mayfield, that is why Hue was let go.

new coach ... more wins....looks like a totally different team
I mean, Bortles was widely considered to be the #1 QB available that year. He was a fast riser who was a 1a/1b to Teddy come draft time.

"Bottom Line Possesses ideal size, athletic ability, intangibles and enough arm strength to develop into an upper-echelon quarterback. Is not yet a franchise quarterback, but has all the physical ingredients to become an outstanding NFL starter and his arrow is very clearly ascending. Warrants top-10 consideration"

Roethlisberger's time at Miami, OH they were still in the same conference as Marshall University. His last season there, they hosted Marshall for the annual game. We traveled up there to watch it, and he put on a show.

It was ridiculously windy that day, "hurricane-like" (okay, not an actual hurricane, but you get the point). Anyway, both teams had the ball 2 qtrs with that wind in their face.
- Marshall's QB tried throwing in it and it was like we were watching a  game of "duck hunt" (Bortles type wobblers)
- Roethlisberger in the face of that wind was throwing absolute darts; he looked like a rifle out there.

It was really something to behold, impressive. But, I hated him back then, and then he got drafted by the freaking Steelers (ugh).

I'll be glad when his playing days are finally over.

Thanks for that story (even though you hate Ben) . Laughing By his own admission, he doesn't "spin" (throw spirals) the ball well, but he has always been good at throwing in adverse weather.

Yes, some sources liked him, others not so much. This was kind of funny.

Hey, and trust me, I'm not claiming the greatness of the Steelers finding good QBs all the time: Between Bradshaw and Ben we suffered with Mark Malone, Cliff Stoudt, Bubby Brister,  Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart, Mike Tomczak, Tommy Maddox. O'Donnell was, meh, serviceable, and Kordell had one decent year, but other than that, I'd say that was 20 years of bad QBs.

And, I believe Mark Brunell was underrated. In his prime, he wowed me a lot (and I hated him then). He had terrific accuracy, could move around, throw deep - very good QB. Those late 90 teams had potent offenses - both rushing and passing. Had he played in the current environment, he probably would have thrown for 4,000 a season, every season.

Hue was an exceptionally horrible coach. Did you watch this season of "Hard Knocks?" He was such a phony, poser and transparent fake.

It was striking to witness. Baker is a natural leader, even as a rookie. Just put in any head coach who doesn't crap all over the team, and
you'd see a big improvement, which we have. Even on his exit media tour, Hue threw blame on everyone but himself. And having Todd
Haley in there just made matters worse, as he was there to weasle the head coach gig. What a mess they were. I don't think Greg Williams
is a legit head coach but ANYTHING but Hue and Todd would be an improvement over that dumpster fire.

It's not only "not easy" finding a franchise QB, it is more of an art than a science. Look at the very best, known top QBs and where they came from. Some were considered great prospects, and turned out, others had many knocks on them.

Brady - the GOAT. 6th round pick, barely even played in college.
Rogers - was fairly highly regarded but fell in the draft from a hopeful #1 overall, to 24th.
Brees - 2nd round, thought to be too short, but will make hall of fame.

And then we had the "sure thing" QBs who busted....
