It’s been a full two years now since he was hired and there still seems to be some confusion as to who should be “held accountable for” or who should be the “recipient of praise” for a job well done. This unfortunately needs to be stated again for those who haven’t kept up.

Hint: it’s not Caldwell - (He in fact was DEMOTED by ceding power to Coughlin)

Quote: We now know without a doubt that everything is Tom Coughlin’s decision. He is fully in charge.

While some people are going to say “Duh?” to that statement, there was still some ambiguity in the air regarding who made what decisions. Who decided who the draft picks were? Who decided on free agents? Who decided to give Blake Bortles a contract extension? Etc., etc., etc.

There was a tendency for fans to immediately shift the blame to Caldwell who was starting to get the ire of fans and turn the good picks into the decision’s of Coughlin and the bad ones were Caldwell being a snake-oil salesman and tricking Coughlin into making the bad decisions.

That’s not ambiguous anymore.

Now we know.

Coffee fetcher?
Has there been confusion? Its always been clear Coughlin has final say but Caldwell has some input

I'd happily fire Caldwell while also acknowledging Tom has had final say since hired.

Coffee fetcher?

He does the same thing he did before.

He just does it with someone looking over his shoulder that has the power to take a red pen to anything on Caldwell's desk.
I don't think it should be confusing. Tom has final say on everything, Caldwell still helps run the college scouting, still helps sign free agents, still has input on draft picks, still helps run things day to day etc etc.

Tom deserves blame for all the bad decisions made since he took charge....but it'd be foolish to ignore that Caldwell still has his hands all over things,we just don't know specifically to what degree on each and every choice. Which was part of the plan.

I wouldn't exactly say that Caldwell was demoted.  He simply answers to a different boss.  His job duties are still the same as any other GM in the league.  The only difference is rather than the owner signing off on his decisions Coughlin (VP of Football Operations) signs off on them.

Contrary to many people's belief, Coughlin isn't as "hands on" as most people think.  To do so would mean that he is micro-managing and he doesn't strike me as being that way.
Think of it as the Electoral College. Coughlin is like Florida and Caldwell is like Montana. Everyone's vote counts, some just carry a lot more weight.

LOL!

I was thinking the same thing.  There's no confusion here.  It was made perfectly clear when he was hired that he was in charge of football operations, and would have the final say on personnel decisions both on and off the field.  I think he defers to Marrone on his coaching staff to some extent...now anyway.  But, he's been the final voice on every move they've made the past couple of years.

Bingo.  I think ultimately, Coughlin works with Caldwell to make personnel decisions on the roster, but he is the person who has the final say.  If he disagrees with something Caldwell is doing, I'm sure he doesn't defer to the GM.
Water is wet.
So we are drafting R Jay again ?
I was against bringing Tom back in the first place. So many people on this board thought it was great, but the philosophy and teachings of Coughlin are from a bygone era. Things have changed, the league has changed and Tom is not known for his own willingness to change. Sometimes it's just best to leave the past in the past.

FBT, unfortunately I beg to differ. Confusion abounds.
