If Telvin was in the team's plans, Caldwell would've flat out said so. Instead, he was intentionally vague. Coughlin is just doing "coach speak", maybe because Caldwell tipped his hand.

Dave Gettleman also said the Giants didn't sign OBJ to trade him. They did. I don't trust anything teams say about a player's job security.

That's all fine and good, but if Coughlin had said, "no comment" or something like that, that would have confirmed the rumor.  The only thing he can say is "No," because any other answer is the same as "Yes."  Dave's comment was revealing.  TC's comment was just trying to clean up Dave's comment.

It can also mean the Jags aren't trading him, why would they, and the issue is with him not showing up or contacting the team.

It costs money to trade or cut him, so this year he is on the team. Not getting a high draft pick, so he either plays or sits and gets fined.

Did I miss something with Telvin Smith last year and this off-season? Was he asked to take a pay cut already? Or is it strictly just about him and Coughlin's comments regarding players being here whether voluntary or not? Seems like this came out of left field over the last few weeks.

That it was reported, nothing happened and I doubt they asked him to take a pay cut honestly since he already converted a bonus last year I think. But who knows.
It can't be about Coughlin comments either as Telvin didn't answer Marrone calls even before Coughlin made the comments although maybe they had en effect on him not calling back in the following days ( and unlike Ramsey he didn't return the calls either). Apparently He simply hasn't been in touch with the team even when Caldwell tried to reach out to him so no one knows why he's doing that (not the missing voluntary activities part but why he's not wanting to talk with the staff).

He's been active on instagram (he's in the caribbean) and apparently a user on twitter noticed that the only "like" he gave to the draft class signing was the one to the Quincy Williams signing. This is only speculation as I haven't personally verified it, there was just someone on twitter stating that so it can just be made up (not using instagram i can't check that either).

A beat writer said that maybe it's cause he'd want a better contract after some splash signing that were made by LB's in FA but I doubt that either.

Last year the locker room at some point was divided and some players called out others for freelancing too much and being selfish. (interestingly Bouye wasn't there for voluntary last year but after 2018 season he said the staff held them accountable but was some players who didn't hold each other accountable and some leaders had better step up next season. Unlike last year Bouye showed up for the voluntary parts this season. Yannick said that in 2019 he's not leaving the room until they make him a captain so maybe there was some leaders who were questioned in the locker room.). So maybe he has some grudges with someone...who knows this last part it's just me throwing out thoughts.
. Marrone said that as far he's concerned and aware between him and Telvin everything was ok at the end of last season.

Who really knows it's really all just speculation at this point, I guess we'll find out this week as Caldwell said he was trying to get in touch with his agent and get to know what's happening.

Coughlin was pretty pissed off at beat writers for asking about Telvin Smith during the post-draft presser, first he gave the "there's no issue, he's our linebacker answer" and then shut them up by telling them that he's not there to talk Telvin and if they want to talk about him to ask Coughlin some other time.
Weird situation.

Well Gettleman sucks and is a liar so there's that.
I'm wondering if Telvin has an incoming suspension the team is aware of, but the public is not.
If I had to venture a guess the team asked Telvin to take a pay cut and he's pissed about it. He is grossly overpaid for his play last season. If reports are accurate that he hasn't even reached out to the team then his leadership should seriously be questioned.

I absolutely call BS on that quote.  EVERYBODY is available for trade, for the right price. We may not be actively shopping him, but if someone calls and offers two first rounders, you tell me the front office is gonna turn that down?

Come to think of it, better not answer that, with some of the opinions of the FO around here....

Thanks for all of the information. Something is certainly off but it does appear it's a possible spillover from the locker room stuff from last year.

That's a good take. Hopefully it's nothing too major if that ends up being the case. Didn't he slip a bit during the draft because of a little bit of weed or something like that? I know he had the under sized question to deal with but I think he had another count or two against him during the draft process.
I'm sure we'll find out before long what the deal is with Telvin. He was a very good player 2 consecutive years and was on the NFL networks list of top 100 players (voted on by players). In order for the defense to return to the level of 2017, they need him to return to that level of play in 2019-20. They really don't have a guy ready to replace him and are already very short on depth at safety.

I’m really wondering if they did draft his replacement in Quincy Williams. I mean he’s kinda the same player...... SS/LB hybrid, super aggressive, fast, etc. maybe the reason Telvin “liked” that pick.

Telvin may be my favorite player on the team so if they trade him then I'll that's it ...... i'll likely need to find another kind of favorite player.
For all we know Telvin is chilling on an island oblivious to all of this.

I hope so.
Dealing Smith now frees up money for the Big 3 starting next year.
Linebacker just isn't as valuable as CB or DE, and with Yannick and Ramsey needing new contracts, Telvin seems like the obvious cost-saving choice.

His 2019 performance makes it an easier one too.
